Thermal Energy Storage System with PCM

Latent Heat Storage (Storage in Phase Change Materials PCM)

In this class of storehouse, energy is stored by virtue of idle heat of change of phase of the storehouse medium. Phase change accoutrements have vastly advanced thermal energy storehouse consistence as compared to sensible heat storehouse accoutrements and are suitable to absorb or release large amounts of energy at a constant temperature. thus, these systems are more compact but more precious than sensible heat storehouse systems

Different phase that can do are

  • solid-solid
  • solid- gas
  • solid-liquid
  • liquid- gas

Solid- gas and liquid- gas metamorphoses aren't employed in malignancy of large idle heats as large changes in volume make the system complex and inoperable. In solid-solid transition, heat is stored as the material is converted from one crystalline form to another. These transitions involve small volume changes; still, utmost of them have small idle heats. For phase- change storehouse media, Swab hydrates called Glauber swab(Na2SO,10 H2O) are preferred. The solid-liquid metamorphoses include storehouse in swab hydrates. Certain inorganic mariners, which are answerable in water and form crystalline swab hydrates, are employed. Let an inorganic swab, which is answerable in water represented by X(Y)n. The crystalline swab hydrate is represented by X(Y)n.mH2O. On hotting up to transition temperature, the hydrate chargers release water of crystallization and the solid remainder (anhydrous swab) dissolves in the released water as following  response takes place

Solid----> Liquid (Waterless  result of anhydrous  swab)

One problem with  utmost  swab hydrates is that the released water of crystallization isn't sufficient to dissolve all the solid phase present. Due to  viscosity difference, the anhydrous  swab settles down at the bottom of the  vessel. This incongruent melting makes the process  unrecoverable since the anhydrous swab at the bottom is unfit to find water for recrystallization to the original hydrate. The recrystallization of an incongruently melting  swab can be achieved either by(i) the use of suspense media or thickening agent or by(ii) mechanical means(vibration, shifting, etc.) Other implicit phase change accoutrements   piecemeal from  swab hydrates are paraffin's(e.g. C18 H38,etc., alkanes containing 14 to 40 C-tittles) and non-paraffin organic accoutrements (e.g. esters, adipose acids, alcohols and glycols), which are suitable at certain situations.
