Cheriyapani Ferry Service: A New Milestone in India-Sri Lanka Connectivity

The newly inaugurated Cheriyapani Ferry service between India and Sri Lanka is a significant development in regional connectivity. The ferry service between Nagappatinam in India and Kankesanthurai near Jaffna in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka commenced on October 14, 2023, after almost 40 years. The high-speed ferry operated by the Shipping Corporation of India has a capacity of 150 passengers. It covers a distance of about 60 nautical miles (110 kilometres) between Nagapattinam and KKS in approximately 3.5 hours depending on sea conditions.

The Government of India supported the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board in upgrading facilities at the Nagapattinam port to commence the service. Similarly, the Government of Sri Lanka has created the necessary infrastructure at the port of KKS. The direct passenger ferry between Sri Lanka and India will provide an efficient and cost-effective means of travel for the people of the two countries, boost tourism and trade links, and strengthen people-to-people ties. The ferry will also enhance economic activity around the two ports and invigorate local economies.

To reach Nagapattinam port, one can take a flight to Tiruchirappalli International Airport or Chennai International Airport. From there, one can take a taxi or bus to Nagapattinam port. Alternatively, one can take a train to Nagapattinam Railway Station and then take a taxi or bus to reach Nagapattinam Port.

In conclusion, the Cheriyapani Ferry service between India and Sri Lanka is an important step towards enhancing regional connectivity and strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries. The ferry service provides an efficient and cost-effective means of travel for people while boosting tourism and trade links. The Indian government's efforts to start this ferry service align with its priority to enhance connectivity with neighbours and in the wider Indian Ocean Region.
