Sunil Mittal Family

Sunill was born into the Agarwal-Khatri intercaste family. Sat Paul Mittal was a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from the Indian National Congress representing Ludhiana, Punjab. He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly twice, in 1976 and 1982, and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha once, in 1988. His father died after a heart attack in 1992. Lalita Mittal, his mother, is presently the Executive Director of Swagtam Trading & Services Ltd. Rajan Mittal and Rakesh Bharti Mittal are his two brothers.

Sunil was always ambitious and business-minded. He began his first firm at the age of 18 in April 1976, with a capital investment of 20,000 obtained from his father, to produce crankshafts for local bicycle makers. When he was around 19, he began importing scraps and bicycle components and moved on to construct a small-scale project to make stainless steel sheets.

Sunil subsequently moved to Mumbai to pursue his business objectives, where he started small by selling stainless steel sheets. This experience taught him that he had the ability to be a successful businessman since he was adept at selling and influencing others.

Bharti Overseas Trading Company

Sunil and his brothers Rakesh and Rajan founded the Bharti Overseas Trading Company in 1980. He relocated to Mumbai after selling his bicycle parts and yarn enterprises and obtained importing licences from exporting enterprises in Punjab in 1981. They then purchased hundreds of portable electric generators from Suzuki Motors in Japan. The then-Indian government abruptly prohibited the import of generators.

Sunil began making push-button phones in India in 1984, replacing the old-fashioned, large rotary phones that he had previously imported from a Taiwan business, Kingtel. Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) was created and had a technical relationship with Siemens AG of Germany in order to produce electronic push-button phones. Sunil was producing fax machines, cordless phones, and other telecom equipment by the early 1990s. ‘Mitbrau’ was the name he gave to his initial push-button phones.

Sunil won one of four mobile phone network licences auctioned off in India in 1992. He signed an agreement with the French telecom giant Vivendi. Sunil was among the first Indian entrepreneurs to recognise mobile communication as a key development sector. In 1995, Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) was established in Delhi to provide cellular services under the brand name AirTel. Bharti became the first telecom provider to surpass the 2-million mobile subscriber threshold within a few years. Bharti reduced STD/ISD cellular pricing in India under the brand name ‘Indiaone’.

Expansion of Bharti Telecom Limited

Sunil took Bharti Infratel public in 2012, raising $760 million in the process.  He expressed his intention to join the board of OneWeb, a space internet startup, in 2015. He participated in a $500 million investment round alongside Coca-Cola, Virgin, and Qualcomm. Sunil made reforms at Bharti Airtel in order for the company to compete with Jio’s 2016 launch. Sunil declared a “war on roaming” in 2017, abolishing tariffs for outgoing and incoming calls within India as well as international roaming charges.
