He chose Sociology and Political Science as his optional paper because it was a topic in his B.A., M.A. and M.Phil courses, and he also taught it for a few years. In 2001, he passed the Civil Services Exam on his third attempt.

He has worked in different capacities in Indian diplomatic missions around the world as well as at the Indian Embassy in New Delhi. He also served as the third secretary, of the Embassy of India, Paris (2004-2005); the Second Secretary of the Embassy of India, Dakar, Senegal (2005-2008); Under the Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi covering Administration and Human Resource Management (2008-2011); Deputy Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi dealing in India’s relations with countries of East and Southern Africa (2011-2015); Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva where Alok Ranjan Jha was part of the Indian delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Council from January 2015 to August 2017 (2015-2017); Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, Kabul, Afghanistan (2017-2018); Director, Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi covering India’s relations with countries of Western Europe (2018-2019); Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi heading two Divisions dealing with Establishment matters as well as Global Estate Management (2019-2021).

Since 2021, Alok Ranjan is in charge of Ambassador of India to the Republic of Belarus.

IAS Alok Ranjan wishes all future IAS aspirants luck and advises them to plan a job in academics, media, or other fields before entering this test, as he believes there is some unpredictability in this exam. He says he wants them to feel detached from the test.
