” The key to happiness is letting each situation be what it is instead of what you think it should be,- Mandy Hale.

Are you tired of life’s unmeasurable problems? Want to be happy? Then continue to read the post till the end. I am giving you some tips to find happiness in your life.

Everyone wants pleasure in this chaotic world which is full of so many problems, failures, and obstacles. Everyone is searching for satisfaction and joyous existence in an otherwise mundane and monotonous life.

In fact, it’s a constant chase. Happiness is a sense of being in deep satisfaction. This you all know.

What is happiness in the real sense?

According to britannica.com- Happiness, in psychology, is a state of emotional well-being that a person experiences either in a narrow sense, when good things happen in a specific moment, or more broadly, as a positive evaluation of one’s life and accomplishments overall that’s subjective well-being.

Why is it important to be happy?

Happiness is do-good feelings because when you are joyful you are positive. This is helpful to keep your mind, body, and soul at peace.

Being happy lowers your stress hormones, and decreases your anxiety, and depression. Positivity impacts your well-being and happiness. Happy people are healthier. They live longer. They are more productive and creative.

Happiness boosts your immune system. It improves all your relationships. Happy people are kinder, more empathetic, compassionate, and generous.

You are happy when things go according to your wishes. And become very unhappy when life tests you. But life is full of ups and downs. And your goal should be to find out how to be happy and enjoy life.

Mirth is a state of mind. Most of the time, it takes a disaster, tragedy, calamity, or trial and tribulation to make you appreciate what you have. Learn to find happiness in the small, ordinary details in life and be content in everyday existence.

As French writer, Colette says,” What a wonderful life I had! I only wish I had realized it sooner”.

Here are some suggestions to be happy.

1. Stop dwelling in your past to be happy.

Now you all should know that ruminating in the past is very unhealthy. You can never bring your past events to your life again, so what’s the point in thinking about the past and making yourself unhappy?

Do not focus on your past mistakes, failures, setbacks, or negative events and trauma. Let them be where they are and you move ahead. Learn lessons from them and gain knowledge, wisdom, and happiness.

You have to get rid of your painful past. The traumatic past will hold you back in life, hurt your present and ruin your future. One of the best life lessons is how to let go and move on with your life with a positive attitude and an optimistic approach.

Always believe that you are stronger than your past mistakes

2. Do not let other people’s opinions define you if you want to be happy.

You are not born on this earth to please everyone. Never get lost in search of other people’s acceptance or approval. In general, we live in a society, where we get influenced by the words of others.

As Jay Shetty says, ” It’s less about not listening to other people’s opinions and more about not feeling the pressure to live up to them. We have created a very blurred line between listening and living up to when we hear something, especially if it’s fear-based, pressure-based, or stress-based”.

Remember, the sooner you stop listening to what people think about you, it’s easier for you to scale your confidence level. No one but you have to live with the choices you make.

People are there only when you achieve success. Once you face setbacks, no one will come to your rescue. So focus on your well-being and stop what people think about you.

3. Do not dwell on your setbacks if you want to be happy.

Feeling of disappointment, sadness, trauma, rejection, and dejection are all temporary. All these emotions will fade away as time passes. Remember this phrase, ” This too shall pass away”.

Be mature enough to tackle all the difficult situations logically and practically for your own happiness. Time is the best healer. Instead of thinking about your failure and setbacks, plan out your goals and be proud that you are able to face any challenges life throws at you.

This will definitely lead to your contentment and joy because you are busy with new plans and strategies to make your life better.

4. Stop comparing yourself to others if you want to be happy.

Comparison is one of the enemies that steal your blessedness. Be yourself in every situation and circumstance. Social media has added this unwanted burden where people are busy observing other people’s lives instead of focusing on their own growth.

Actually, this blocks all the road to happiness. Most of the time this comparison creates a negative feeling in you. ‘Everyone is better than me’, ‘everyone has a bigger home than mine’, and ‘everyone earns more than me’- these are some of the thoughts that come to your mind.

The comparison will always make you feel inferior and less confident.

Some people may be better than you in every way. But this doesn’t make you any less. They are not YOU. Merriness is thinking that you are the best and unique.

5. Happiness comes from within not from any outer source.

Most of us try to rely on external sources without knowing that YOU are the person who is in charge of your happiness. Stop focusing on things that you don’t have and begin counting your blessings.

Nobody has everything they want but that doesn’t mean that you stop trying to achieve your goals. Be happy, not because everything is good but because you can see good in everything that you are blessed with.

” Being happy is something that each of us determines, it is not something that we find outside of ourselves. It is within us and our choice”.- Catherine Pulsifer.

6. Keep smiling often if you want to be happy.

Smile away your painful memories, insults, and humiliations you have faced, and problems, difficulties, and all obstacles. This is a sure-shot way to be happy.

Smile is the key that fits the locks of every heart. Because of your smile not only others but you also feel happy. Happiness and a smile are contagious.

Actually, smiling can make your brain more energetic, and the energetic brain is more alert, and attentive. Science has shown that the mere act of smiling can lift your mood, lower stress, boost your immune system positively and even prolong your life.

” Smile, smile, smile at your mind as often as possible. Your smiling will considerably reduce your mind’s tearing tension”.-Sri Chinmoy.

7. Give compliments often to others.

Wherever, and whenever needed, give compliments. Quick and sincere praise can brighten someone’s day and that in turn makes you happy and very satisfied.

Remember to give compliments in a respectful manner. Taunting, criticizing, and an insult to others will never give you joy because that guilt kills your happiness.

In fact, this kind of negativity is unhealthy and reflects on your character and personality. This also shows your inferiority complex and insecurity.

” Compliments land as soft and gentle on my ears as a butterfly”.- Richelle E. Goodrich.

8. Accept and understand that life is full of ups and downs.

” Our life is a mixture of many ups and downs. Accept this reality and may you be able to handle all the situations you come across in the best ways possible”. Unknown.

Let us face it that it’s impossible to avoid some kind of stress and tension. Accepting this will make you more mature to handle any kind of setbacks, mistakes, and difficulties positively, practically, and logically.

Stanford psychologist, Kelly McGonigal, said, ” Stress is not always harmful and we can even change our attitude about stress”.

Celebrate the ups and downs both. Ups because you are happy, and downs to keep your morale intact. And always remember every down teaches you lessons.

You need to stay positive to be happy and enjoy life.

9. Go out of the house for your own happiness.

Take a walk, jog, or run, but be with nature for at least 30 minutes every day. Getting out of your four walls is a tremendous energy and mood boosters.

According to a 2019 Study that included data from 19,806 participants, spending at least 120 minutes in nature per week can significantly boost health and well-being.

Gasparatos said that connecting with nature provides opportunities for recreation and leisure, spiritual fulfillment, personal development, social relation, and aesthetic experiences.

When feeling down, something as simple as visiting a nearby park, or watching sunrise and sunset will peep up your energy.

10. Find a self-care routine.

Always remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish but necessary to make yourself happy and confident. Self-care includes a proper nutritious diet, a stress-free, and worry-free life, exercises, meditation, and other measures to keep your level of happiness and satisfaction high.

Actually, because of our busy schedules, we neglect this aspect of our life. There are certain other things that you have to include in a self-care routine.

Having 6 to 7 hours of sound sleep, working out every single day, saying NO when needed, comparing yourself to others- the list can go and on. One thing is sure to be happy you have to give YOURSELF priority.

11. Be your own best friend.

No one is there to accompany you for going out? Is there any thumb rule that you can’t go out alone? One of my nieces once told me that she doesn’t ask anyone to accompany her if she wants to go out.

She just goes to some mall, orders a cup of coffee, and sits and observes people. She says that this is a tremendous mood lifter and she likes her own company.

I think all of us should adopt this way to find happiness instead of searching everywhere to look for happiness. This not only is healthy but also boosts our confidence and self-esteem.

12. Write down happy moments you spent at the end of each month meticulously.

Making a list of happy moments every month will increase your happiness quotient as by now you know the secret of being happy. In fact, you should go through this list whenever you are down, sad, or unhappy.

Do you remember how old photographs just light up our minds? In the same way, this list also will remind you that life is all about joy and happiness. These little memories and lists can have a great impact on your being happy.

Realizing that how happy you are, depends on your Mindset, the habits you practice, and how you live each day.

13. Live in a clutter-free home.

Decluttering may sound very overwhelming feeling but in actuality, it’s a great stress buster and joyous work. Take 15 minutes every day to declutter your home and you have very positive vibes that give you happiness.

You need not get stressed out and carry the work like a burden. Do the cluttering at your own pace and without any worries. You can clean one space and then go for another.

Decluttering doesn’t happen in one day. It’s life long process. But it’s also the most powerful way to feel at peace because you are living in a home that is neat, clean, and tidy.

14. Accept compliments and criticisms gracefully.

Like ups and downs, feedback and criticism are also part of everyone’s life. Both are important to living a happy life. How? Feedback boosts your morale and criticism tells you where you are wrong giving you a chance for improvement.

As Marek KoSniowski said, ” accept both compliments and criticism. It takes both sunshine and rain for a flower to bloom”.

There is a way to accept compliments. Feedback should never make you proud but humble. Same way criticism also should be accepted with grace. Happiness is enjoying everything in your life y mixing positive elements in it.

Self-motivation is not stopping and persisting in spite of criticism but also the ability to not let praise consume you.

15. Learn to build a growth mindset.

There are two kinds of mindset Fixed mindset and growth mindset. People with a fixed mindset believe that everyone has the same amount of talent, smartness, and intelligence. They think that it cannot be changed or developed.

People with a growth mindset believe that talent, smartness, and intelligence are just like any other skills that can be improved or developed over time.

You have to have a growth mindset because that is how you make progress in life. And progress makes everyone happy and contented.

In her book, Mindset: the new psychology of success, Carol S. Dweck, Stanford University psychologist and researcher, differentiates between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. She says that people with a fixed mindset believe that abilities can’t be developed. A growth mindset encourages you to overcome obstacles and view setbacks as opportunities.

16. Learn to lead a simple life.

Leading a simple, minimalist life is a sign of happiness. Living with things you really need and not what you want or like gives you a stress-free life. Needs can be satisfied greed can not be.

Simple living has been adopted by our ancestors and we all know that they lead an extremely happy and contented life in spite of not having any modern-day technology and comforts.

A small house, less stuff, and meager expenditure give you the joy that is really hearts satisfying.
