Types Of Military Colleges

Military colleges can be divided into three categories:

  • Service Academies
  • Senior Military Colleges
  • Military Junior Colleges.

US Service Academies

Service academy programs offer a great alternative to getting a college degree to become a military officer.

Service academy students receive a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned officers. They must serve at least five years after graduation.

How Do I Get Into a Service/Army Academy?

Service Academies are very selective in terms of admission.

Your academic performance in high school and extracurricular achievements will be the primary criteria for evaluating your abilities.

We are proud to say that the academies have a number of students who have taken on leadership roles and shown an interest in their local communities.

They are also grateful for students who excelled at athletics and were given prizes and leadership roles on their teams.

The requirements for admission to most academies of service are the same as for

Student Life at Service Academies

The school is strict but not too strict. Students who do drugs or drink are subject to severe penalties.

The school emphasizes athletics. Students must participate in activities and play at home.

USA Service Academies

There are five Academies within the Service, each focusing on a specific area of military service:

  • US Military Academy, West Point, NY
  • US Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD)
  • Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs, CO)
  • US Coast Guard Academy (New London, CT)
  • US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, NY)

Senior Military Colleges

A senior military college (SMC), in the United States, is one of six schools offering Reserve Officers of the Military (ROTC). (ROTC) programs are less than 10 USC.

SMCs allow students to learn military skills while in college.

Unlike service academies, SMC graduates don’t have to join the military unless they are awarded an ROTC scholarship.

How to Get into Senior Military Colleges

Candidates are usually evaluated on academic achievements.

If your GPA is at least 3.0 and you have passed all standardized tests.

There is a good chance that you will be accepted.

These are the general requirements for an SMC.

In the 2021-2022 session for instance, tuition at the University of North Georgia for Cadets was around $21,000 annually.

The cost of tuition at Virginia Tech was approximately $23,000 for in-state students and $42,000 for out.

#3 Military Junior Colleges

Military Junior Colleges can be described as two-year colleges. These allow cadets to be commissioned officers within the Army Reserves.

Students receive an associate’s level degree upon graduation. This is done via the Early Commissioning Program ECP.

They must have a bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution to be eligible for regular office in active duty.

In addition to ECP, some MJCs offer one-year preparatory courses that allow students to transfer into a service academy. This is called the Service Academy Preparation Program.

Some programs can be used for up to two years.
