House of the Dragon season 2 reportedly begins filming in March

The first season of House of the Dragon wrapped a couple months back, and it was a success. HBO’s next step is to keep this momentum going. What happens with Rhaenyra, Daemon and Alicent Hightower next? We’ll find out, but not for a minute.

Because HBO only renewed House of the Dragon for a second season after the first began airing (pretty much the second the premiere dropped and HBO saw how many people tuned in), production is getting going a little later than many fans would likely want. But it is getting going. According to Grace Randolphwho reliably gets movie and TV scoops over on her YouTube channel Beyond the Trailer, production on House of the Dragon season 2 is due to start in March of 2023.

Given the complexity of a show like House of the Dragon, they’ll probably be filming for a while and doing post-production for some time after that. The most likely scenario is that we’ll see the season 2 premiere sometime in 2024.

What new characters will we meet in House of the Dragon season 2?

As happened with Game Of Thronesthe cast of House of the Dragon will expand in season, as the show gets deeper into adapting George RR Martin’s book Fire & Blood. Some of the likely newcomers include:

  • Cregan Stark: Rhaenyra Targaryen’s son Jacaery went on a diplomatic mission for his mother at the end of season 1. One of the most important stops on his tour is Winterfell, which at this time is ruled over by a young man of about Jace’s age named Cregan Stark . This one is all but assured to show up.
  • Jeyne Arryn: Jace will also be stopping by the Vale, which is currently ruled over by Jeyne Arryn. She’s been mentioned briefly, so hopefully we see her in the flesh.
  • Daeron Targaryen: The youngest son of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys I Targaryen didn’t appear in House of the Dragon season 1, but it’s been hinted that he’ll turn up in season 2. He was being fostered in Oldtown during the events of season 1.
  • Nettles: In the season 1 finale, Daemon mentions that there are several wild dragons living on Dragonstone. The blacks will need all the firepower they can get to win the war against the greens, and it’s no good to have dragons without riders. What’s the solution? In Fire & Blood, the blacks put out a call for anyone who can master the wild dragons. Nettles is one of several people who answer the call. She’ll have a long story before the show is over.
  • Addam of Hull: Addam of Hull and his brother Alyn also answer the blacks’ call for potential dragonriders, although Addam will end up going on the most memorable journey. He, Nettles, and a couple other “dragonseeds” differ from Rhaenyra and crew in that they didn’t grow up at court. They’re just ordinary people, which could give a new energy to the show.
  • Alys Rivers: Alys is a mysterious woman who works at Harrenhal and who eventually gets mixed up with Aemond Targaryen. She doesn’t become important until a bit later in the narrative but I wouldn’t be surprised if they introduce her in season 2.

And those are just some of the new faces we’re likely to see. Bring on season 2!
