The international conference on sand and dust storms is scheduled to take place in Tehran on September 9-10, when representatives from 50 countries and 15 international organizations, as well as a vast number of experts, university professors, and members of executive, research, and educational institutions are to attend the event, the IRNA reported on Tuesday.

Chair of the National Committee to Combat Sand and Dust Storms of Iran’s Department of Environment Ali Mohammad Tahmasebi Birgani said that 15 international organizations will take part in the conference.

Some 57 internationally recognized individuals have registered in the event, while the number of participants is expected to increase, he added.

As many as 250 experts, academics, as well as representatives from executive, research, and educational entities are expected to take part in the international conference.

Tahmasebi Birgani pointed to the presence of President Ebrahim Raisi at the opening ceremony of the conference, noting that meetings at top levels will be held for various countries.

“We will hold expert sessions focused on forecasting and warning systems on dust and sandstorms, their damages and repercussions, as well as the preparations for the establishment of a regional center for the West Asia and the Central Asia regions,” he added.

For years, the Islamic Republic has played an active role in combating desertification, dust and sandstorms. Furthermore, Iran ranks as the fifth state that joined the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
