Following a failed attempt to acquire Canadian Yamana Gold, Griffith left his position as chief executive of Gold Fields in December, after only a brief tenure with the Johannesburg-based gold company.

Griffith spent the majority of his career at Anglo American, where he oversaw the Kumba Iron Ore KIOJ.Anglo American PlatinumAMSJ.J. was successfully restructured and revived thanks in large part to Jand.

Griffith will be in charge of Vedanta’s base metals division, which includes zinc mines in South Africa and Namibia, an iron ore company in Liberia, and processing companies in the Middle East and India.

Griffith, a mining engineer, will likely be more focused on turning Konkola Copper Mines back into a viable enterprise now that Zambian authorities have returned control of the assets to the Indian business following years of tortuous litigation over ownership.

In a statement, he added, “I look forward to fostering innovation, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth across Vedanta’s base metals businesses, building KCM as a cornerstone asset for the company, and expanding the group internationally.”

According to Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe, on September 5, Vedanta has promised to invest around $1 billion in the Zambian enterprise, where several of its underground mines “need immediate recapitalization.”
