As it increased the buffer stock of Onions from 300,000 metric tonnes to 500,000 metric tonnes, the Centre said on Sunday that the onions would be sold at a discounted rate of Rs 25/kg starting on Monday through the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF).

This action aims to control onion prices until the next harvest is ready in October.

According to a formal announcement, starting on Monday, NCCF stores and mobile vans will start selling onions from the government’s buffer supply to retail customers.

For any unanticipated price rises during the period of limited supply, the government has stocked 3 lakh tonnes of onions in the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF).

E-commerce channels will be utilized in the upcoming days to appropriately increase onion retail sales, according to the statement.

On Sunday, the consumer affairs division sent orders to the National Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and NCCF to each purchase an additional 100,000 tonnes of onions.

Government statistics show that the price of onions has started to slightly rise. The retail price for this necessary kitchen item in all of India as of August 10 was Rs 27.90 per kilogram, an increase of little more than Rs 2 per kilogram when compared to the same time previous year.

In an effort to control the rising prices on the domestic market, the Center on Saturday placed a 40% levy on the export of onions until December 31.
