Mbappe beats PSG by making all-time scoring record in the French champions

With a 4-2 victory over Nantes at home in Ligue 1, Kylian Mbappe cemented his place as Paris St. Germain’s all-time leading scorer by contributing to his team’s expansion of their Ligue 1 lead to a provisional 11 points.

The 24-year-old Mbappe improved the record he shared with Edinson Cavani by scoring his 201st goal in all competitions with PSG two minutes into extra time.

After the final buzzer, the club held a brief ceremony at which a large photograph of Mbappe was on display at Parc des Princes.

“Being here is quite unique. It’s an honour to be here as the club’s leading scorer; the last time I was here, I announced that I was staying (to extend his contract) “Mbappe stated.

Being a PSG player and representing the biggest club in France while wearing this historic jersey is an honour.

Lionel Messi and Jaouen Hadjam’s own goal put PSG up 2-0 after 17 minutes in the Champions League round of 16, but the Canaries drew even before halftime due to Ludovic Blas and Ignatius Ganago. PSG will go to Bayern Munich next week seeking to overcome a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

However, Christophe Galtier’s team secured all three points thanks to goals from Mbappe and Danilo with seconds remaining, giving them 63 points after 26 games.

Olympique de Marseille, who are in second place, will visit Stade Rennais on Sunday.

However, Blas cut the deficit in half with a beautiful shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 31st minute. Seven minutes later, Ganago equalised the score by deflecting a corner past the Italian goalkeeper.

Nevertheless, order was eventually restored 15 minutes into the second half as Danilo headed in a cross from Mbappe before the French striker scored his record goal with a left-footed shot from within the box.

But, the night was not as pleasant for PSG as Mukiele was taken out with a heel issue, and in the 75th minute, centre back Marquinhos returned to the locker room with what appeared to be a lower back issue.

Prior to that, RC Lens’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League took a further hit when they were held to a 1-1 home draw in the northern derby.

Although the outcome moved Lens up to third place in the rankings with 51 points, Franck Haise’s club has now only won one of their previous seven league games and is currently only five points ahead of Monaco and Stade Rennais, who still have a game to play.
