Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania is the second-worst-rated MCU movie ever

The initial reviews for Marvel’s new Movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have arrived, and they are not particularly kind of the super hero extravaganza. A lot depends on the movie because it ushers in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The storyline, though, seems to have been awry, according to the early assessments. It already has one of the lowest ratings in the franchise’s history on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.

Details about Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania is the second-worst-rated MCU movie ever

Based on 140 reviews, Ant-Man 3 has a 52% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Except for Eternals from 2021, which received a dismal 47%, no MCU movie has ever received a score this low. On the website, a score below 60% is referred as as “rotten,” and one above it as “fresh.” All MCU movies—aside from these two—have received a fresh grade, with movies like Iron Man (94%) and Black Panther (96%), as well as Avengers: Endgame (94%), Thor: Ragnarok (93%), and Black Panther (96%).

The film’s narrative, shallow gags, and lack of any stakes have been criticised by reviewers, but many have commended how it introduces the new antagonist, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). “Ant-Man isn’t an example of terrible comedy,” wrote Mick Laselle in a piece for the San Francisco Chronicle. It is a waste to everyone involved and is lousy drama and science fiction. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is a chaotic, terribly unfunny mess that has forgotten why its hero was such fun,” stated Kristy Puchko for Mashable in their review.

It was dubbed by several critics as the worst Marvel movie to date. Quantumania has a weight to it that doesn’t feel substantial and is so gloomy it nearly seems desperate. It makes Eternals appear gloriously airy by comparison, even if it is strewn with the occasional wisecrack, according to David Fear’s review in Rolling Stone. Marvel has long been known for its strong CGI, but it has also come under fire in this instance. “Visually, the film is chaotic and bland; the CGI is startlingly awful, and the action appears jumbled,” wrote Maria Lattila of Whynow.

Positive reviews of the movie did appear from certain critics, who praised the cast’s performances. It was “basically an animated film where the cast played most of their roles in front of green screens… a good film to chew gum to,” according to critic Jim Schembri.

Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, Bill Murray, Kathryn Newton, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Michael Douglas appear in Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. On February 17, the movie will be released in theatres.
