NEED TO KNOW ALL ABOUT – INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS) EXAM

What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is considered to be the world’s most popular English test for higher education and global migration. Whether you are looking to study, develop your career, or settle in an English-speaking country, IELTS can pave the way.

Educational institutions, employers, professional registration bodies, and government immigration agencies often require proof of English Language skills as part of their recruitment or admission procedures. Ielts is widely accepted for these purposes. IELTS is designed to test the language ability of people who want to study or work where English is used as the language of communication.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test conducted by the British Council, IDP IELTS Australia, Cambridge ESOL, for non–English speakers around the world, who want to study, work, or move to a country where English-speaking is the primary mode of communication. IELTS is useful not only for higher education but for migration purposes also.

The results of the IELTS test are recognized by employers, governments, and educational institutions of more than 11,000 organizations in almost 140 countries in the world. The visa authorities and university officials want to make sure that you can successfully communicate in an English-speaking country by measuring your English language proficiency through the IELTS score.

How does IELTS work?

IELTS was developed by some of the world’s leading language assessment experts to test the full range of skills needed to study or work successfully in an English-speaking country. You will be assessed on –

Listening – to see how well you understand ideas, recognize opinions, and follow the development of an argument. The listening module is designed to assess your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts. It includes four sections with a range of accents and speech patterns. Candidates listen to conversations, monologues, and discussions, answering questions to demonstrate comprehension.

Reading – to see how well you read for general sense, main ideas, and details, and whether you understand the author’s inferences and opinions. The reading module evaluates your ability to understand and interpret written information. It comprises three sections, progressively increasing in difficulty. Texts are sourced from newspapers, journals, books, and other publications. Questions test your ability to identify the main ideas, details, and the writer’s opinions.

Writing – to see how well and how accurately you write a response, organize your ideas, and use wide-ranging vocabulary and grammar. The writing module consists of two tasks:

Task 1 (Academic): Describing visual information, such as charts or graphs.

Task 1 (General Training): Writing a letter based on a given situation.

Task 2 (Both): Writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

Speaking – to see how well you can communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences, and express and justify your opinions. The speaking module assesses your ability to communicate verbally. It consists of three parts:

Part 1: Introduction and interview.

Part 2: Long turn – candidates receive a topic and have one minute to prepare before speaking for two minutes.

Part 3: Discussion – a more in-depth conversation on the topic from Part 2.

Which IELTS test is right for me?

There are two main IELTS tests available – IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training:

IELTS Academic – is designed to measure your English language proficiency and to assess if it is suitable for an academic environment. The test reflects aspects of academic language and evaluates whether you’re ready to begin training or studying in English.

IELTS General Training – is designed to measure your English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The test reflects both workplace and social situations. The right test for you depends on whether your goal is to study or work in your chosen country.

It is expected that the applicant must be at least 16 years old or above to take the IELTS exam and also possess a valid passport. You must have basic knowledge of the English language. Other than these, you must have a strong objective of studying, working, or migrating to an English–speaking country. The IELTS score is calculated on a scale of 1-9 which is known as bands. Based on this, band 6 and above are considered competent if you aim for standard universities. It is important to note that different universities have their own criteria for accepting the IELTS score.

The test is held in high regard internationally because of its robust structure and assessment framework. The IELTS test examines your communicative ability in everyday situations and scenarios for both work and study. Importantly, the IELTS speaking test is conducted face-to-face, which makes it a very accurate measure of English communication skills.

There are no limitations on taking the IELTS exam. You can attempt the test as many times as you want till you acquire your desired IELTS score. However, the retake of the exam costs the same as the first attempt of the test.
