On September 3, the Government of India announced that it will celebrate the year-long commemoration of the Hyderabad Liberation Day starting from September 17, 2022. The date, 17th September, signifies the merger of erstwhile Hyderabad State under Nizam rule with the Indian Union. The inaugural program of the celebration is scheduled to take place at Parade Grounds in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Liberation Day Movement in India
This Year, the Government of India has decided to celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day in a grandiose way to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the chaos of the liberation war. It will also create awareness of the story of heroism, sacrifice, and resistance among the people of the current generation all over India. The Center plans to observe this day in all three states, even though Maharashtra and Karnataka already recognize it as Marathwada Liberation Day and Hyderabad – Karnataka Liberation Day, respectively.

Hyderabad Liberation History
Many of the exam aspirants such as UPSC one’s would be interested in knowing all about the Hyderabad Liberation war. At the time of independence of India in 1947, the princely states were given a choice to accede to either India or Pakistan. Or else they could stay independent. By 1948 most of the states either joined India or Pakistan. But the Nizam of Hyderabad decided to stay independent. He was encouraged by Pakistan and Muslim native peoples, to stay as an independent power and improve his armed forces to resist the integration. But due to internal chaos emerging in the state of Hyderabad, the Indian Army was sent to Hyderabad under Operation Polo. The military took complete control of the state. On 17th September 1948, more than one year after India secured Independence from the British, the state of Hyderabad got its independence from Nizam’s rule and finally, Hyderabad was absorbed into India. It was possible due to swift and timely action taken by the first Home Minister of India, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. Since then Hyderabad Liberation Day is observed on 17 September every year.

Pre – Independence Hyderabad
At the time of independence, 562 out of 565 princely states decided to join India. But the Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab of Hyderabad, and the Ruler of Kashmir did not show any intent to do so.
Subsequently, they were annexed to India. The entire present-day state of Telangana was a part of the Nizam’s Hyderabad state, as was the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, which included the districts of Aurangabad, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Osmanabad, and Parbhani, as well as the Kalaburagi, Bellary Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Vijayanagara, and Bidar.
Post – Independence Hyderabad
The Nizam of Hyderabad was encouraged by Pakistan and Muslim native peoples, to stay as an independent power and improve his armed forces to resist the integration. The Government of India did not like it. It wanted Hyderabad to be an integral part of India. Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel was the mastermind behind the annexation of Hyderabad into India.
Hyderabad Liberation Day – Operation Polo
On 13th September 1948, the Indian Army was sent into Hyderabad under Operation Polo. Between the 13th and 18th of September, the military took complete control of the state. In the conflict between the Indian Army And Nizam Army, 32 people were killed and 97 were injured on the Indian side, while 490 people were killed and 122 were injured on the Hyderabadi side. Finally, Hyderabad was integrated into the Union of India.
