The National Shrine of Saint Jude is a shrine to one of Jesus’ 12 apostles and a Roman Catholic saint, Saint Jude. It is in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Chicago, Illinois. It is a place where Catholics from the US and other countries go to pray. It is part of a church that is served by the Claretians, who continue to take care of the Shrine.

Details Of The Church

The Pallottine Fathers and Brothers have been running and working at the St. Jude Shrine in the middle of Baltimore, Maryland, for more than 100 years.  In 1917, the Pallottines took care of the Shrine after the Archbishop of Baltimore gave it to them. Around the start of World War II, when loyalty to St. Jude was at an all-time high, regular Novena Services were set up.

At first, only local parishioners came to the Novena Services. After a short time, though, it became a place where people from all over the city came to pray to St. Jude. 

However, not a long time ago, people outside of Baltimore knew about the Shrine, and more and more people from the suburbs started coming to the Shrine every Wednesday.  

Because of this growth, there are now four Novena Services every Wednesday, and in Saratoga Street, there is also a gift shop where you all are allowed to enter. People come to the Shrine from all over the world as it is a place where people can find peace, quiet, and hope on their own or as part of a bus journey.

They spend some time in the Millennium Room, a historical and interactive multimedia center that is open to everyone. People who cannot come to the Shrine can send their prayers there daily so they can be prayed for at the Perpetual Novena Services.  They can also get a free copy of the Novena Booklet by asking for it.  

This lets them say the Novena Prayers quietly at home, while the Perpetual Novena Services at the Shrine always remember their needs.   Every year, thousands of people join the League of St. Jude with themselves and their loved ones, both living and dead.

Services Of San Judas Church

Now let us take a look at the services of San Judas church; 

• Every Thursday of the year except Thanksgiving Day and Holy Thursday, prayers at the shrine start at noon and 6:30 p.m.

• The Rosary and prayers for the St. Jude Novena are said at the beginning of each event.

• During the saying of the Rosary, people can go to confession.

• About 20 minutes after the service starts (12:20 pm and 6:50 pm, respectively), Mass starts.

• After Mass, you can look at the relic of St. Jude Thaddeus at the Shrine. This happens about 50 minutes after the service starts (12:50 p.m. and 7:20 p.m., respectively).

History Of San Judas Church In Chicago

In 1923, Illinois Steel moved more Mexican workers from Fort Worth, Texas, to South Chicago. Father William T. Kane, SJ, began the Our Lady of Guadalupe mission church. In 1924, when Kane had to leave for health reasons, Cardinal George Mundelein gave the mission to the Claretians.

Father James Tort, C.M.F., priest of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Chicago, Illinois, United States, started the national shrine of St. Jude. Father Tort was born in Barcelona and served in the Canary Islands and Mexico. In 1914, he ran away from Mexico and worked for a while in Texas and Arizona. In 1927, he became the leader of the Guadalupe mission.

Many of Tort’s members of the church worked in the nearby steel works, which were cutting their staff by a large amount at the beginning of 1929. This cut was a sign of what was to come in the Stock Market crash. Tort was sad to see that about 90% of the people in his church did not have work and were having trouble paying their bills.

Saint Jude Thaddeus was a big part of Tort. To cheer up his parishioners, Tort started to pray to Saint Jude every day. On February 17, 1929, the first nine-day prayer service to honor the saint was held. 

During the Great Depression of the 1930s and World War II, thousands of men, women, and children held novenas at the shrine and devotion to the patron saint of desperate causes spread across the country.

I had a great time going to the National Shrine of St. Jude. It was a lovely thing to do. I didn’t want to leave because it was so peaceful and sacred. St. Jude has helped me in many ways, and I will always be thankful to him.

That’s why I went to the church to say thank you. The shrine was very beautiful. There are a lot of spiritual St. Jude things to buy in the gift shop, which I did for myself and my family. We walked by this church on our way to the Shrine of St. Jude, and as luck would have it, Mass was going on inside. This was a mostly Spanish area, so it was good that it was in English. The construction of the church was simple, and the granite altar of St. Jude was put in a good place for everyone to see. The church doors are not locked after Mass, so you can stay and pray for a while.

For those of us who believe in St. Jude, the National Shrine to St. Jude is a must. It is inside the Lady of Guadalupe Church. It is a sacred experience I will never forget. It costs about $40 to take a taxi, or about $8 to take the train to the stop that is three blocks from the church.
