CSR: GhanVan program launched for planting indigenous trees in the Western Ghats

GhanVan program – With the belief that Sustainable Is Achievable, Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, collaborated with Icici Foundation, the CSR arm of ICICI Bank and its Group Companies, to launch ‘Project GhanVan’ – a visionary tree plantation program aimed at fostering environmental conservation. As part of the collaboration, senior executives from both organizations signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Over the next three years, the project intends to plant 2.5 lakh indigenous trees across 75 acres of rich land in the catchment areas of Tata Power Hydro sites in Maharashtra’s Western Ghats at Bhivpuri, Khopoli, and Bhira. This is a significant step toward a greener, more sustainable future.

As part of the project, the ICICI Foundation will carry out reforestation activities, construct solar water pumps with drip irrigation, and maintain them for a three-year period. It will also take special precautions, such as trenching, to safeguard trees from forest fires. This collaborative effort will be carried out in three stages, with 50,000 local indigenous species, including Babul, Tok phal, Kinai, Reshim dhavada, Lakuch, Apta, Pivla Kanchan, Kadilimb, Undi, Kumbha, Bherli mahd, and Bhokar, to be planted on 15 acres. GhanVan stresses regional biodiversity protection, which leads to habitat conservation for native avifauna variety. The initiative incorporates advanced techniques such as healthy 2-3-year-old seedlings, drip watering, and strict monitoring until viability is established.

Tata Power’s MD and CEO, Dr. Praveer Sinha, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability, saying, “Our ‘Sustainable Is Attainable’ movement epitomizes our steadfast commitment to sustainable development.” Our century-old efforts have contributed significantly to the protection of native biodiversity in the Western Ghats. The collaboration with the ICICI Foundation for Project GhanVan demonstrates our continuous commitment to supporting meaningful green initiatives that have a positive impact on both the environment and local populations, paving the path for a more sustainable future.”

“We are delighted to collaborate with Tata Power to launch ‘Project GhanVan,’ a tree plantation programme that embodies our collective commitment to a sustainable green future,” said Sanjay Datta, President, ICICI Foundation. ICICI Foundation has planted almost 26 lakh trees across the country through its different afforestation programs over the years. The ICICI Foundation is ready to launch ‘Project GhanVan’ based on its experience with large-scale afforestation and ecological projects in 52 forests and national parks around the country.”

Tata Power is committed to biodiversity conservation through a variety of initiatives that include wildlife and vegetation protection, as well as creating awareness among employees and local people. The organization is dedicated to reducing their environmental impact while also preserving biodiversity by creating waterholes for grassland creatures, researching the biodiversity potential of solar plants, and hosting webinars with specialist groups on topics such as elephant conservation and river ecology. The company recently earned the coveted UNDP Mahatma Gandhi Award for Biodiversity, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability through specific activities and projects in biodiversity conservation.

The ICICI Foundation is dedicated to protecting and nurturing the environment in order to preserve the survival of future generations. The Foundation’s primary focus is on environmental and ecological activities, healthcare, societal development, and promoting sustainable livelihoods. It has been carrying out a number of environmental projects, including tree planting, sustainable forests, watershed management, and rainwater gathering. To far, the ICICI Foundation has planted approximately 26 lakh trees. It has intervened in 52 forest reserves by constructing water bodies, restoring habitat, removing weeds, and safeguarding biodiversity.
