Nagarnar Steel Plant has today achieved an unprecedented milestone in steel circles by creating its ultimate product – HR Coil – 9 days after the production of Hot Metal. Coming from a mining major with no past experience with steel production, the feat is nothing short of amazing. 

“For over 6 decades, we had been playing a pivotal role in the domestic steel market as a supplier of quality iron ore,” said an elated Shri Amitava Mukherjee, Acting CMD and Director Finance of NMDC, who arrived for the event with other functional directors of the company.  

As a result of today’s developments, we have emerged as the newest participant in the local steel market, putting Bastar on the steel map. 

Shri Mukherjee blew in Nagarnar Steel Plants’ blast furnace on August 12th, kicking off the final commissioning process. It should be noted that the pace of commissioning has picked up recently under Shri Mukherjee’s leadership, and the Board has been visiting Nagarnar on a regular basis to clear bottlenecks, motivate the team toward their goal, and emphasize the importance of adherence to safety norms. 

Industry veterans noted that commissioning three important units in the hot zone – Blast Furnace, Steel Melting Shop, and the Mills (Thin Slab Caster – Hot Strip Mill) – in such a short period of time is a unique feat. “Even as we faced innumerable challenges, over the years we have been fortunate to have been supported at every stage by the Central and State governments, the Steel Ministry, the steel industry, other CPSEs, technological providers, the local community, the media, and all stakeholders,” said Shri Mukherjee. We could not have accomplished our aim without their unwavering support.”

“The smooth commissioning of several critical units in the past few days, culminating in the production of HR Coil from iron ore mined in Bastar, is a testimony to the commitment and dedicated hard work of the team led by Shri K Praveen Kumar, who galvanized the small band of professionals into a powerful force that delivered on time,” said Mukherjee. 

The steel plant with a capacity of 3 million tonnes per year was developed at a cost of around Rs. 24000 crores. On the strength of its technology, which includes its most contemporary Mill, the Plant is poised to make its name in the Hot Rolled market with its repertoire of high grade Hot Rolled steel that is slated to fulfill the requirements of various key consuming sectors. Nagarnar Steel Plant’s competitive advantage originates from its iron ore supply relationship with the Bailadila mines, which are about 100 kilometers away. 

Nagarnar Steel Plant’s product mix includes low carbon steel, HSLA & Dual Phase Steel, and API grade steel that can be rolled in thicknesses ranging from 1mm to 16mm. The Thin Slab caster at Nagarnar Steel Plant is the public sector’s widest mill, capable of rolling 1650mm wide HR. 

HR Coils, Sheets, and Plates produced by India’s most modern mill are expected to meet the growing demand for high-quality HR used in the production of LPG cylinders, bridges, steel structures, ships, large diameter pipes, storage tanks, boilers, railway wagons, and pressure vessels, as well as tanks, railway cars, bicycle frames, engineering and military equipment, and automobile and truck wheels, frames, and body parts. 

At a later stage, the plant will also produce specific steels for use in the manufacture of generators, motors, transformers, and vehicles.
