OPPO India teams up with Atal Innovation Mission to set up the first PPP-model Atal Tinkering Lab

As Knowledge Partners, OPPO India announces the establishment of an Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) in Kerala in conjunction with NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM). This initiative encourages students to investigate, create, and complete projects using DIY kits in robotics, electronics, and rapid prototyping.

Shri Rajeev Chandrashekar, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship as well as Electronics and Information Technology, launched the lab at St Paul’s CEHSS in Kuriachira, Thrissur, on July 10, 2023. The fundamental goal of this effort is to empower a future-ready workforce and to foster entrepreneurship and technical skills among adolescents. Using government grants, 10,000 ATLs were created in 35 Indian states and union territories by 2022. This partnership marks the foundation of the first-ever Atal Tinkering Lab, based on the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) concept.

“On behalf of the Atal Innovation Mission team, I welcome OPPO to the ATL Community,” said Dr. Chintan Vaishnav, MD, Atal Innovation Mission. The construction of India’s first PPP Atal Tinkering Lab in conjunction with OPPO India marks an important milestone in the country’s School Innovation journey. We intend to democratise tinkering and make it available to many more students around the country through this new model of partner-established ATLs. I would like to welcome other partners to join this unique and exciting project to develop many more ATLs in India, thereby empowering more young inventors.”

The ATL was established to encourage students in grades 6 through 12 to create innovative solutions. Students can use cutting-edge technological techniques such as 3D printing, the Internet of Things (IoT), robots, miniaturised electronics, space technology, drone technology, and fabrics inspired by technology.

“OPPO India is committed to social upliftment by investing in youth and providing holistic learning opportunities,” said Mr. Vivek Vasishtha, Vice-President, Public Affairs, OPPO India. We are excited to open our first-ever Atal Tinkering Lab, which will provide a modern learning ecosystem to nurture future innovators and entrepreneurs. This partnership is part of our effort to encourage ‘out of the box’ thinking and teach young children community-oriented problem-solving skill.

This collaboration between AIM and OPPO, with Learning Links Foundation as the implementation partner, utilises the ‘Hub n Spoke’ model to establish an innovative learning environment through practical experiences and frequent training sessions. The ATL in the nodal school will serve as a ‘Hub’ for students from adjacent government schools to visit and conduct experiments in the lab. This strategy will also benefit three community schools.

“We are extremely proud to be collaborating with OPPO India and Niti Aayog to establish the Atal Tinkering Labs.” “We will collaborate to raise a generation of individuals who will contribute to the development and advancement of our society,” stated Dr Anjlee Prakash, Chairperson of the Learning Links Foundation.

The ATL will identify and nurture children with exceptional potential through the Student Innovator Programme and the ATL Marathon, providing them with mentorship opportunities from eminent entrepreneurs and preparing them to compete in national/regional contests, fostering lifelong learning.

Through numerous initiatives, OPPO India has made aggressive steps to provide superior educational opportunities to youngsters and motivate them to achieve a better future. These projects include establishing a computer lab at Varanasi’s Roundtable School and cooperating with MENSA to provide poor children with digital literacy skills. OPPO India recently collaborated with CSC Academy to train 10,000 women in semi-urban and rural areas as Cyber Security Ambassadors.

The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, is the Government of India’s flagship project to encourage a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship throughout the country. AIM has launched the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) programme. ATL is a cutting-edge space developed in a school with the goal of encouraging young minds’ curiosity and inventiveness. To present, AIM has chosen 10,000 schools in 700+ districts around the country to build ATLs.
