Sanofi India Spreads Awareness on Diabetes

Sanofi India – One of the most important worldwide health crises of the twenty-first century is diabetes, which is among the top ten killers along with cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and respiratory disease. India is referred to as the global “Diabetes” capital.

According to estimates from November 2021, a research by the International Diabetes Federation found that over 74 million people in India have diabetes.

Another 40 million persons are at high risk of acquiring Type-2 diabetes and have impaired glucose tolerance.

Additionally, 53.1% of Indians with diabetes do not know they have the disease, which is larger than the national average.

In the past, type 2 diabetes was more common in adults, but it is increasingly more common in youngsters. 282,832 children and adolescents were reported to have Type-1 diabetes in India in 2021, according to the Diabetes Altas.

The best way to delay or stop the onset of Type 2 diabetes is to lead a healthy lifestyle. To reduce the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, schoolchildren’s awareness of healthy lifestyles, including the need to maintain a balanced diet and engage in physical activity, needs to be increased.

Sanofi India

Sanofi India Limited introduced the KiDS (Kids & Diabetes in Schools) programme in 2019 to achieve the same goal by educating children about diabetes and encouraging a healthy lifestyle both in and outside of the classroom. The goal is to make sure that future generations have a healthy tomorrow.

The project raised awareness of diabetes prevention among both schoolchildren and adults through a variety of fun activities. Sanofi India Limited got the Healthcare (Non-COVID) award at for their efforts and effects on the ground.

Implementation strategies

Sanofi India’s 2019 launch was intended to raise diabetes awareness and encourage behaviour modification among the general public and schoolchildren. In order to foster ownership and better execution, they distributed principals and performed orientation in the classrooms.

Efforts for awareness in schools

They developed the skills of Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) physicians in the treatment of Non-Communicable Diseases, specifically Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Cancer, and they provided training for teachers of young people.

For kids to interact with their families and improve their behaviour, activities were organised. This included the Sakhar Free Shukrawar and the STEP Challenge. Students were urged to participate in the STEP challenge, which involved walking 10,000 steps per day for three months as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Significant change

The KiDS effort used mass media advertisements to reach 21.4 million individuals (during a six-month period, repeat listeners). Out of Goa’s 16 lakh residents, the group reached 9.5 lakh through partnerships with local FM stations BIG FM and Indigo Radio.

The awareness campaigns had an effect on 150,000 students. There were 1200 parent-child teams among the 2400 participants in the STEP challenge. The teams took more than 160 million steps together.

The KiDS programme has been the most active among students thanks to tight collaboration with the education department. The campaign emphasises diabetes awareness and risk factors that can be reduced.
