Tata Chemicals Europe signs pact with Vertex for sale of low-carbon hydrogen

Tata Chemicals Europe, based in Northwich, announced on Thursday that it has inked an offtake agreement with Vertex Hydrogen, promoted by Essar, for the supply of more than 200 megawatts of low-carbon hydrogen. According to a statement from Vertex, it will provide hydrogen to TCE as part of the new agreement. As a joint venture between Progressive Energy and Essar Oil UK, Vertex Hydrogen is constructing the first low-carbon hydrogen manufacturing facility in the UK.

TCE is one of Europe’s top producers of sodium carbonate, salt, sodium bicarbonate, and other ingredients used in the production of glass, detergents, chemicals, food and animal feed, as well as other goods used in a variety of industrial applications. The manufacturer of chemicals is attempting to decarbonize its UK operations with the goal of attaining “net zero” manufacturing by 2030.

According to the new offtake deal, Vertex will provide TCE with hydrogen as the manufacturer works to further decarbonize its UK facilities in order to achieve “net zero” manufacturing by 2030, according to a statement from Vertex. As an industry leader driving real change to cut emissions, Vertex CEO Joe Seifert stated that the company is “thrilled to sign these heads of terms with Tata Chemicals Europe.”

As an industry leader driving real change to cut emissions, Vertex CEO Joe Seifert stated that the company is “thrilled to sign these heads of terms with Tata Chemicals Europe.” Martin Ashcroft, Managing Director of Tata Chemicals Europe, said: “We have been proponents of Vertex and the low carbon hydrogen market as a significant opportunity to further decrease emissions at our world-class CHP facility.

As we continue on our path as a pioneer in industrial decarbonization, this agreement represents the next phase in our collaboration. According to Vertex, it is investing roughly £1 billion on a plant in the UK’s North West that will initially produce 1,000 megawatts of low-carbon hydrogen capacity, which is sufficient to supply the energy needs of a city the size of Liverpool. At maximum capacity, it will collect 1.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, which is the same as removing 7,50,000 automobiles from the road.

On the other hand, Tata opened the UK’s first industrial-scale carbon capture and usage plant in June 2022. The 20-million-pound investment captures 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, equivalent to taking over 20,000 cars off the road.
