Jio juggernaut
Data was an expensive proposition in the Indian telecom era prior to Jio. Before Jio’s introduction in 2016, the average cost of a gigabit (GB) of mobile data was Rs 226. Back then, individuals would make a few weekly trips to the neighbourhood store to add fresh music and movies to their phones.
With Jio’s introduction in late 2016, everything changed. The company’s decision to shock the market and excite potential customers by providing free voice calls throughout 18,000 cities and 2 lakh villages helped kickstart the new telecom network. What was more important was that free mobile broadband data was also available.
Over the following few years, this led to a brutal pricing war, but the user faced significantly lower data costs as a result. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) stated in a 2019 report that rates for mobile data has decreased by around 95% (to Rs 11.78 per GB) in three years.
