ONDC is to be open to the public in Bengaluru on Friday

The public will be able to shop at the government-created Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) e-commerce business in Bengaluru starting on Friday. The trade ministry created the online platform as a way to support small shops and counter the dominance of e-commerce giants.

Consumers in Bengaluru will experience shopping in a completely new way, according to a tweet from minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal. “Beta testing of the Government’s groundbreaking Open Network For Digital Commerce, which is democratic, efficient, and empowers customers and small enterprises, to begin from tomorrow,” he stated.

The open network for digital commerce’s experimental phase was introduced by the government in April in five cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Shillong, and Coimbatore.

According to PTI, 20 organisations have officially committed a total of Rs 255 crore to the platform. Lenders have already pledged investments, including SBI, UCO Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Bank of Baroda.

With ONDC, the government hopes to lessen the dominance of Flipkart and Amazon, two significant international firms in e-commerce. They jointly control more than half of the nation’s online sales. Not only that, but these two platforms are also charged with restricting market access by favouring particular suppliers.

The ministry stated in April of this year that the ONDC is anticipated to increase consumer accessibility and inclusivity of e-commerce. By using any suitable application or platform, consumers may be able to find any seller, item, or service, potentially expanding their range of options.

Customers will be able to match demand with the closest supply through the platform. Additionally, this would allow customers to select the neighbourhood businesses they like.
