Infosys cracks whip on moonlighting

The Indian software company Infosys has warned its employees against taking on second jobs in an email sent out by the HR department as the controversy over moonlighting in the IT industry heats up. 
 
The email emphasizes provisions of the employment contract which prohibit employees from taking up secondary job, concluding with the phrase “Remember – NO TWO-TIMING – NO MOONLIGHTING.” 
 
According to the employee handbook and code of conduct, dual employment is not allowed at Infosys. You agree not to accept employment, whether full-time or part-time, as a director, partner, member, or employee of any other organization or entity involved in any type of business activity without Infosys’ agreement, as is expressly mentioned in your offer letter. The email emphasizes that the consent “may be given subject to any terms and restrictions that the Company may deem appropriate and may be revoked at any time at the Company’s discretion. 
 
Last month, Business Today looked at Infosys’ employment contract and discovered that the business forbids “moonlighting.” Only with the company’s approval may employees take on additional work or side jobs. You agree not to accept employment, whether full-time or part-time, as a director, partner member, or employee of any other organization or entity involved in any type of business activity without Infosys’ agreement, according to the employment contract. This is a required condition of employment. The consent may be given subject to any terms and conditions that the company may deem appropriate and may be withdrawn at any time at the company’s discretion.

Not just Infosys but other Indian IT companies have voiced their opposition to side jobs. Other Indian IT behemoths like TCS, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Technologies do not make it simple for employees to take on second jobs thanks to their employment contracts. 
 
Even the executives of these IT-related organizations have expressed publicly their distaste for moonlighting. Last month, Rishad Premji, the executive chairman of Wipro, tweeted, “There is a lot of talk about people moonlighting in the tech business. Of the India@100 Summit last month, N Ganapathy Subramaniam, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Director at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), stated that employees may suffer long-term consequences if they pursue short-term benefits through unethical behaviour.
