Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) is India’s first rural Medical college, located in Sevagram near Mahatma Gandhi’s karmabhoomi. The Kasturba Health Society is in charge of it. MGIMS Wardha was founded in 1969, during Gandhi’s centennial year. The college was previously affiliated with Nagpur University (1969–1997), but since 1998, it has been affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.

The institute is in Sevagram, a small village about 8 kilometres from Wardha. It is well connected to the rest of the country via rail and road. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur is about 70 kilometres away from the college.

MGIMS is India’s first rural medical college started by Dr. Sushila Nayyar. The Kasturba Hospital, founded in 1944, is the only hospital founded by the father of the nation himself.

MGIMS has evolved into a low-cost institute that serves the rural community. It has also worked hard to achieve its community-oriented mission by collaborating closely with its alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre, which is now in its 8th year. It has also introduced health insurance into rural areas. This service was used by 68000 families in the Sevagram area in 2014-15.

Admission Process

The state of Maharashtra has the most seats in India, and the students also take the most exams each year. Because there are more government medical colleges, the state quota cutoff is much lower.

Candidates for admission must fulfill all of the eligibility requirements outlined in the admission rules.

Previously, the institute had special reservations for students from the county’s rural areas, and the institute had its own premedical test (PMT) examination, which included a multiple choice question test on physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as a special theory paper on Gandhian thoughts. The students are chosen based on their performance in these exams.

Students must attend an open counseling session after submitting their NEET scorecard. The NEET score and counseling scores are used to determine who is accepted into college after the counseling process. If chosen, the necessary documents are submitted to UG/PG Admission, Admin Building.

Admission goes by two criteria:

Maharashtra State Quota – Maharashtra Government after MHT-CET examination &

All India Quota – Government of India after AIPMT examination

For UG

  • Candidates must apply for and take the NEET UG entrance exam, which is administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • In addition, aspirants must attend the MBBS Counseling process.
  • Participation in the counseling process and payment of fees will determine final admission.

For PG

  • Admission to the post graduate courses is through NEET-PG conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).
  • The authorities will prepare a merit list for shortlisting candidates.
  • In addition, aspirants must participate in the College’s counseling process.
  • Final admission will be determined by the marks obtained, participation in the counseling process, and payment of fees.

Note :- Disqualification From Admission

The State common entrance test cell Maharashtra, Mumbai provided counseling for all rounds (up to Mop Up round 6) in 2021 by allotting seats online. In Maharashtra state counseling, all rounds (up to institutional/stay vacancy round) have a one-time registration and choice filling. Registration for MBBS/BDS and AYUSH occurs concurrently, but counseling dates differ, and admission is based on merit in the NEET 2022 score.

Counseling Rules:-

1) Registration or choice filling begins with the first round.

2) If a candidate is assigned a seat in any round and does not accept it or resigns from it after accepting it, it will be assumed that the candidate is uninterested in the admissions process. If it is maintained, the candidate will not be given a seat in the subsequent rounds.

3) Candidates may upgrade their previous round seat to the next round.

First Stage Counseling :-

This counseling is done online, and seat allotment is done on the vacant seats of all government/private colleges of state quota according to the provisional merit list by computer. If participants get seat allotment, they must go to the allotted college to have all their documents verified. Formalities must be completed.

In the second round, candidate seat will be upgraded based on the higher option they selected during choice filling. If they are satisfied with this allotment and do not want to upgrade this seat further, they must fill out a status retention form in the college at the time of admission; otherwise, he/she will not be considered for upgrade in subsequent rounds. If they do not receive a seat allotment in the first round, he/she will have to wait until the second round.

Second Stage Counseling :-

Following the first round of counseling, the second round of MCC is held to fill the vacant seats and the seats transferred to the state. This counseling is also available online. In this case, the first-round seat can also be upgraded. If he/she joined the seat in the second round of MCC, they will be unable to participate in the second round. If they do not receive a seat allotment in this round, they will have to wait until the Mop Up round.

Counseling for Mop Up round 1,2 :-

This counseling is done after the second round to fill the vacant seats. This counseling is available online. Mop up round 2 is held for all vacant seats in government and private colleges from Mop up round 1. This is the final round for private medical colleges. Following this round, all vacant Private MBBS seats are transferred to the concerned college, and these seats are filled by the college through the Institutional round. Following this round, these seats are filled by the counseling authority conducting Mop up round 3,4, 5,6,7……… to fill the vacant seats of MBBS in government colleges.

Eligible candidates for Mop up round counseling:-

1) All candidates who participated in the first and second rounds but did not complete the status retention form are eligible for an upgrade in this round.

Hospital of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences

When the first batch of 60 students enrolled in 1969, MGIMS was the independent India’s first attempt to give rural health a new direction. It now claims to have trained over 2300 doctors.

MGIMS has come a long way in the more than three decades since its inception. MGIMS has made its own small history, growing from a 15-bed hospital to a hospital with 972 beds and cutting-edge technology.

In 2014-2015, approximately 70,000 people visited the institute’s outpatient department. During this time, over 48,000 patients were admitted.

Sushila Nayar, Gandhi’s close associate and personal physician, established the Kasturba Hospital in 1945. Kasturba Hospital at Sevagram has grown from a 770-bed hospital to a nearly 1000-bed teaching hospital located in Sevagram, about 8 kilometres from Wardha town, that provides tertiary care healthcare facilities to rural patients.

Over the course of a 24-hour period, approximately 1700 patients seek outpatient care at the hospital, hospital pharmacies handle 1800 prescriptions, 140 patients seek admission to hospital wards, 14 patients undergo major surgeries, 12 babies are delivered, and 20 units of blood are transfused.

Kasturba Hospital is part of MGIMS, which is consistently ranked as one of the top 20 medical schools in the country. This MGIMS teaching hospital has the benefit of nearly all staff physicians serving on the faculty.

Kasturba Hospital has been committed to training and mentoring the next generation of international leaders in science and medicine since its inception in 1969, providing a wealth of opportunities for physicians, nurses, and other health professionals.

In the hospital, nearly 2300 doctors have been trained, and these talented men and women, in turn, bring new and innovative perspectives on how to treat and care for patients.

Kasturba Hospital also collaborates closely with health care institutions to provide patients in their communities with expert treatment and cutting-edge clinical trials. They have collaborated with St John Medical College in Bangalore, as well as the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Placements

MGIMS is a medical college, placements are nearly 100%, and anyone who wants to work after graduation can do so in any government or private hospital.

Those who want to pursue post-graduate studies, on the other hand, usually need a year to prepare. Salary varies according to location, but it typically ranges from Rs. 45,000-1,00,000 for students with an MBBS degree, and it is higher for those who have completed post-graduation.

MGIMS and KHS were brought in to provide rural health care. The best part of college is serving at the village level and for people who are still unable to access proper health care.
