Who is eligible for IBPS Exam?

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) annually administers exams to hire individuals for different banking positions. These jobs include clerical cadre, probationary officers, and specialist officers. Although Ibps has yet to release the official notification for the exam, the eligibility criteria are expected to remain unchanged from previous years. The IBPS eligibility criteria for the exam are based on several factors, including the candidate’s nationality, age, and educational qualifications. Additionally, candidates belonging to reserved categories may need to fulfil additional criteria.

IBPS Eligibility Criteria

IBPS Exam Nationality Criteria

Candidates must meet the nationality requirements to qualify for the IBPS Exam. Specifically, they must be one of the following:

  1. A citizen of India
  2. A subject of Nepal or Bhutan
  3. This refers to a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, to establish permanent residence there.

This refers to individuals of Indian origin (PIO) who have relocated from countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Burma, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zaire, and Zambia, with the intent of permanently settling in India.

IBPS Exam Educational Qualification

If you want to take the IBPS exam, you must have a degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification recognised by the central government. Some important things to remember about the educational qualification requirements:

  1. The qualifying exam must have been passed on or before August 2021.
  2. The date mentioned on the mark sheet is the official date of passing the qualifying exam.
  3. A copy of the mark sheet or passing certificate must be submitted during the interview to prove that the exam was cleared before the cut-off date.
  4. To obtain official results or a web-based certificate from the University, get the original signed certificate from the appropriate authority indicating the date of passing. These documents are typically only available on the University’s official website. The obtained percentage in the qualifying exam must be specified when submitting the online application.
  5. If the University awards CGPA or OGPA, it must be converted into a percentage. This conversion applies to universities that award classes or grades based on marks obtained in the honours subject.
  6. The fraction of the percentage obtained will not be ignored. For instance, 59.99% will not be rounded to 60%; it will be considered less than 60%.

IBPS Exam Age Criteria

To be eligible, candidates should be between the ages of 20 and 30 as of August 1st, 2020. However, those belonging to reserved categories may qualify for age relaxation. The table below outlines the specific age relaxations available for each type.

CategoryAge Relaxation
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST)5 years
Other Backward Classes (OBC) – Non-Creamy Layer3 years
Persons with Disabilities (PwD)10 years
Ex-Serviceman, Commissioned Officers (ECOs)/Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCOs)5 years
Persons domiciled initially in Jammu and Kashmir from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 19895 years
Persons affected by 1984 riots5 years

It’s important to note that SC/ST/OBC candidates can receive cumulative age limit relaxation, but only for one of the remaining categories that allow age relaxation. To take advantage of this age relaxation, candidates must provide original and photocopy supporting documents at any stage of the recruitment process. It is important to note that no reservation can be availed in the Officers’ cadre for veterans. Additionally, the status of an ex-serviceman ceases once they join a government job on the civil side after availing of the benefits offered to them as an ex-serviceman.

Eligibility for EWS Category

Candidates in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category belong to families with a gross annual family income of less than Rs.8 lakhs. Existing reservations do not cover them for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Schedule Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). IBPS reserves 10% of vacancies for them. To qualify for this category, candidates must fulfill the following requirements in addition to those mentioned earlier:

When determining a family’s EWS status, all properties owned by the family in different locations will be combined. The term ‘family’ includes those seeking reservation benefits, parents, and siblings under 18. Their spouse and children under 18 years old will also be considered. To receive the EWS reservation benefit, you must provide an Income and Asset Certificate issued by a competent authority in the required format during document verification and interview. The annual family income encompasses revenue from all sources, such as salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc., and must be from the financial year before the application year.

Candidates who possess any of the following assets, irrespective of their annual family income, will not be considered to belong to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category:

  • A 200 square yards or more residential plot in areas other than notified municipalities.
  • The city must be notified to qualify, and the residential property must be at least 100 square yards.
  • Residential apartment measuring at least 1,000 square feet.
  • Five acres of agricultural land or more.

The term “Family” includes the candidate’s parents, spouse, children, and siblings seeking the benefits of EWS reservation. It is important to take note that when applying for the property holding test to check EWS status, the property owned by the “Family” in other locations will be clubbed together. Additionally, candidates who wish to avail the benefits of the EWS category for the IBPS exam must produce an Income and Asset Certificate in the prescribed format during the document verification and face-to-face interview rounds.

Eligibility for PwD Category

Persons with disabilities (PwD) are eligible for reservation under section 34 of the ‘Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016’ if they fulfil the criteria set by the Government of India. The Act provides for reservations to candidates falling under the following categories:

  1. Locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy.
  2. Deaf and hard of hearing
  3. Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability and mental illness
  4. Blindness and low vision
  5. Multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses of all the categories as mentioned above, including deaf-blindness, in the posts identified for each disability.

To be eligible for reservation benefits, applicants falling under specific categories must provide a Disability Certificate issued by a competent medical authority. The certificate should clearly state the type and percentage of disability. It is mandatory to produce this certificate during the document verification and interview stage of the IBPS recruitment process.

Demands for PwD through Services of Scribe

The use of a scribe during the IBPS Examination 2023 is allowed for candidates with a permanent issue in writing speed or with a minimum disability due to any reason, subject to the following rules:

  • Candidates who require the use of a scribe during the examination must apply for the service while registering for the IBPS exam.
  •  The cost of arranging the scribe must be borne by the candidate availing the service.
  • The candidates using a scribe will be eligible for an additional 20 minutes or, as recommended, for the entire duration of the exam.
  • The board has provided compensatory time to candidates who require it due to their disabilities, and such concessions will be provided accordingly.

Information for Candidates Having Intellectual Disability

Candidates with a permanent disability of over 40% in the categories of mental illness, intellectual disability, autism, or specific learning disability are entitled to an extra 20 minutes per hour of the examination, irrespective of whether they use scribe services or not.

Information for Candidates with Cerebral Palsy and Locomotor Disability

Candidates who have a minimum of 40% cerebral palsy and locomotor disability, which substantially affects their writing speed and overall performance, will be eligible for a compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of the examination, or as stipulated by the board. This extra time will be provided irrespective of whether the candidate uses a scribe.

Information for Visually Impaired Candidates

Visually impaired candidates with a disability of at least 40% are entitled to access the content of the question paper and receive an additional 20 minutes per hour as compensatory time. However, if these candidates have yet to request a scribe, they may still access the question paper through the magnifying font feature.
