The UC Doctoral Scholarship and associated scholarships, along with other UC-funded doctoral scholarships, are grouped into three categories. These, and their co-tenability conditions, are:

  • Core – Not co-tenable with any other Core scholarships.
  • Prestige – Co-tenable with Core scholarships.
  • Recognition – Co-tenable with Core scholarships and do not include additional monetary value.

To be eligible for the Prestige and Recognition scholarships, applicants must have already been awarded a Core scholarship. Because of this, Prestige and Recognition scholarships are awarded at the end of each academic year. If an applicant is awarded a Prestige scholarship, its value is added to the value of the Core Scholarship, so a stipend of $28,000 p.a. is increased to $33,000 p.a.

Eligibility Requirements for University of Canterbury Scholarships for International Students 2023

The following are the criteria for applying to any of the University of New Zealand doctoral Scholarship for 2023-2024 Academic Session

General UC Scholarships for international students

  • Brownlie Scholarship: The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value of NZ$5,000 per 120 points of enrolment.
  • Doctoral Graduate Women Canterbury (Inc.) Trust Board Scholarship: $24,500 per 120 points of thesis enrolment. The recipient may elect to deduct their tuition fees from this amount.
  • Ngai Tahu Research Centre Doctoral Scholarship: $21,000 per 120 points of thesis enrolment + tuition fees for thesis enrolment only, at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate.
  • Rata Foundation Scholarship: $24,500 per 120 points of thesis enrolment + tuition fees for thesis enrolment only, at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate
  • UC Doctoral Scholarship: $28,000 per 120 points of thesis enrolment + tuition fees for thesis enrolment only, at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate.
  • UC Doctoral Scholarship for Students with Disabilities: $28,000per 120 points of thesis enrolment + tuition fees for thesis enrolment only, at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate.
  • UC Matariki Doctoral Scholarship: $28,000per 120 points of thesis enrolment + tuition fees for thesis enrolment only, at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate.
  • UC Pacifika Doctoral Scholarship : $28,000 per 120 points of thesis enrolment + tuition fees for thesis enrolment only, at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate.
  • Helen Macmillan Brown Bursary : Female first-year undergraduate students who are residents of a hall or village that the University recognises as being affiliated with the University.
  • Sir William Hartley Scholarship :  The scholarship is tenable by students engaged in study for a research doctoral degree at a European university. Preference is given to those who will be studying at the University of Cambridge, the University of London, or the University of Oxford.

Subject Specific Scholarships

Art Scholarships

  • Ethel Rose Overton Scholarship: This scholarship is value up to $30,000 ($10,000 pa), $7,500 for MA, $5,000 for BFA and  $3,000 for BA(Hons).
  • Farina Thompson Charitable Trust Music Scholarship : Applicants must be enrolled, or intending to enroll, full-time at the University in a degree programme with a major in Music.
  • Edward Gibbon Wakefield Doctoral Scholarship : Open to University of Canterbury doctoral students in all subject areas; however, preference will be given to applicants studying a subject in the Humanities, Creative Arts, Law, Music, or Political Science.
    Applicants must enroll in a doctoral programme at, or otherwise be attached to Christ Church, Oxford.

Business & Law Scholarships

Department of Economics and Finance PhD Scholarship: No Application is Necessary as it is Open to Open to applicants who are enrolled full-time or part-time and engaged in study for a PhD degree in the Department of Economics and Finance at the University.

UC Te Kaupeka Ture Faculty of Law PhD Fees Scholarship: Open to applicants who are enrolled full-time or part-time and engaged in study for a PhD degree in the Te Kaupeka Ture | Faculty of Law at the University.

Education, Health and Human Development Scholarships

William and Ina Cartwright Scholarship: The scholarship provides financial assistance at a value of $5,000 per annum for four years for the doctoral programme at the domestic rate.
