World getting ‘measurably closer’ to 1.5-degree threshold
According to the recent World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the global Average Temperature may increase by more than the targeted 1.5 degree Celsius.
- The WMO has issued a forecast that the global average temperature could exceed the targeted 1.5°C rise well before 2100.
- WMO has released two reports titled “The Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update 2023- 2027”, and “State of Global Climate 2022”.
- According to these reports, by 2027 the global average temperature may increase by 1.5 degree Celsius.
- Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, parties pledged to limit the average temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. However, the current target has been set to limit it to 1.5°C by 2100.
- This goal was endorsed as a global target by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2018. However, the small island states did not accept the 2 °C target, as it could threaten their existence.
- The 1.5°C target could save the Earth from being hit by more frequent and intense heat wave droughts, heavy rainfall, sea level rise and more climate crises.
Reasons for the inability to meet the target –
- Developed countries such as the US, Japan, Russia and Canada have made little progress in meeting their climate pledges.
- It is noteworthy that these countries are historically responsible for excessive greenhouse gas emissions.
- Build-back solutions introduced to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic are not sustainable.
