The Fellows, who range in age from 25 to 35, are outstanding leaders with a track record of fostering innovation and having a beneficial impact on their communities and nations.

The Fellows take part in six-week Leadership Institutes held by American schools or universities where they study business, civic engagement, or public management during the Fellowship. Fellows improve local American communities while exchanging best practices throughout the Institutes.

• high levels of social and communicative ability;
• a vibrant, upbeat outlook;
• a proven understanding of, enthusiasm for, and professional expertise in the desired field or career path; and
• A promise to go back to Africa thereafter and use what they’ve learned about leadership to help their native nation and/or community.

Approach to Application

An open competition based on merit is used to choose recipients of the Mandela Washington Fellowship. All legitimate applications will be examined by impartial readers after the deadline. After this examination, selected semi-finalists will be contacted for an interview by the American embassies or consulates in their home nations. These in-person interviews will be held in the home nations of the chosen semifinalists in Africa.

Candidates must present a copy of their international passport (if available) or other government-issued photo identification at the time of the interview if they make it to the semi-finalist stage. The mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation in the finalist’s home country in Africa is a requirement.
