PhD position title: PhD Position – Cryo-EM of membrane remodeling proteins

You will be working on cryo-EM investigations of membrane remodeling proteins in the field of Structural Biology at our institute for the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons, directed by Prof Sachse. A variety of cryo-EM structures of bacterial and eukaryotic members of the endosomal sorting complexes needed for transport (ESCRT) protein family were recently determined by the Sachse lab. We biochemically extract and reconstitute ESCRT protein complexes in lipid environments to get a deep structural understanding, and then visualize them using cryo-EM methods. You’ll be part of a network of membrane biology researchers and cutting-edge cryo-EM infrastructure.

Ph.D. position summary/title: Design and modeling of an electronic system for qubit initialization and readout in a scalable quantum architecture

We are developing scalable electrical architectures based on semiconductor spin quantum bits (qubits) to make the goal of a universal quantum computer a reality. Moving elements of the control circuits closer to the qubits is critical for eventually scaling up the number of qubits into the millions. In order to do this, we develop and build integrated cryogenic circuits for qubit control and readout in cutting-edge CMOS technology. Because qubits are very sensitive to disturbances and operate at temperatures as low as a few hundred millikelvins, there are stringent restrictions for power consumption, noise, and space. As a result, new and innovative designs and circuit topologies are required.
