Apply now for Spring 2023 internships

SSI students, apply now for these two Spring 2023 internships:

Archaeology Internship

Lynn Dodd, Professor of the Practice of Religion and Spatial Sciences, is seeking a student with spatial sciences training for a paid internship starting in Spring, 2023. The student needs to have a solid GPA (3.0 or above) and an ability to commit at least 5 solid hours weekly.

The goal of the ongoing project is/has been:

  1. to capture the necessary data to understand best practices nationally (done)
  2. to assess California practices and needs (underway)
  3. to make feasibility recommendations based on these two (upcoming).

The student would learn about California heritage management and cultural resource policy (a boon for anyone who envisions themselves working in Development, planning, or environmental compliance, or policy). They will gain skills in interviewing staff members in California's Cultural Resource Information Center offices about the regional workflow and resource differences. In support of doing the interviews, they also will gain an understanding of human subjects research requirements and will be paid to take the requisite training provided through USC's CIMI system.

Additionally, because the interviews will relate to present practices, data capture, database use, database dictionaries, and workflow issues, the student will gain skills in comparing existing practices in California to more robustly fashioned systems in other states, e.g., Florida, Texas, among others. Finally, the student will receive support and financial resources to make posters for presentations, mentoring in making oral presentations, and financial support for travel to make presentations for scholarly and policy meetings.

An SSI student who also was an archaeology student participated previously. In consecutive years, he co-authored and presented the results of research in scholarly meetings. We are now working toward preliminary publication of these results.

To apply, please email Professor Dodd at [email protected] with a short statement of interest and your STARS report. You may include your resume (optional).

Jamboree Housing Internship

A simple project. Jamboree Housing has over 100 properties located across the state. We are often asked for a map of our properties within a county or area. Interns will create maps that are easy to read and share with community partners.
• Property Specific Resource Maps-Community Impact
Some Jamboree property staff have created their own list of nearby resources for their residents. Interns can help create easy to read maps of these local resources to would help residents understand what is in their immediate area.
