Which Surah to Recite for A Deceased Person?

There are several Surahs (chapters) from the Quran that are often recited for the deceased.

Among them are Surah Al-Fatiha (the Opening Chapter) and Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112).

Additionally, Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2) and Surah Yasin (Chapter 36) are also commonly recited for the deceased.

Surah Al-Fatiha is particularly significant and is often recited as it serves as a supplication for guidance and mercy from Allah. It is also commonly recited during funeral prayers (Salat al-Janazah).

While these are some of the commonly recited Surahs for the deceased, it’s essential to note that any part of the Quran can be recited as a form of prayer and supplication for the deceased.

How Do You Pray for a Deceased Person?

Praying for a deceased person in Islam involves several steps and can be performed individually or collectively. Here is a general guide on how to pray for a deceased person:

  1. Intentions (Niyyah): Begin by making a sincere intention (niyyah) to pray for the deceased person’s forgiveness and mercy. Your intention should be solely for the sake of Allah.
  1. Performing Wudu (Ablution): It’s recommended to be in a state of ritual purity by performing ablution (wudu) before engaging in prayers.
  1. Facing the Qiblah: Turn towards the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, known as the Qiblah.
  1. Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha: Start by reciting Surah Al-Fatiha (the Opening Chapter of the Quran) silently or audibly. This chapter serves as a supplication for guidance and mercy from Allah.
  1. Making Du’a (Supplication): After reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, you can make du’a (supplication) for the deceased person.

You can ask Allah to forgive their sins, grant them mercy, and elevate their status in the Hereafter.

You can also pray for their entrance into Paradise and protection from the punishment of the grave.

  1. Reciting Additional Verses or Surahs: While not obligatory, you can also recite other verses or chapters from the Quran, such as Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112), Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113), and Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114). Surah Yasin (Chapter 36) is also commonly recited for the deceased.
  1. Sending Rewards (Thawab): Conclude the prayer by sending the rewards (thawab) of your prayers to the deceased person.

You can say something like, “O Allah, please grant the reward of this prayer to [mention the name of the deceased].”

  1. Offering Optional Acts of Worship: After performing the prayer, you can engage in optional acts of worship, such as offering charity (sadaqah) on behalf of the deceased or reciting additional prayers (nafl) for their benefit.

It’s important to remember that praying for the deceased is a form of worship and should be done sincerely and with humility.

Additionally, while there are recommended practices for praying for the deceased, the sincerity of one’s intentions and the heartfelt nature of the supplications are of utmost importance.
