It is a prayer recited by Muslims seeking forgiveness from Allah for their sins and shortcomings. 

The prayer typically includes expressions of remorse, repentance, and a plea for mercy and forgiveness from Allah. 

This dua is often recited during moments of reflection, particularly after sinning or during special occasions such as the month of Ramadan or during the last ten nights of Ramadan known as Laylat al-Qadr, which is considered the Night of Decree and forgiveness.

1. Dua e Maghfirat for the Deceased in Arabic:

The Dua e Maghfirat for the deceased, which is a supplication for the forgiveness of the deceased, is as follows:

“اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِفُلانٍ وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ فِي الْمَهْدِيِّينَ، وَاخْلُفْهُ فِي عَقِبِهِ فِي الْغَابِرِينَ، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلَهُ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ، وَافْسَحْ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَنَوِّرْ لَهُ فِيهِ”

“Oh Allah, forgive me, my parents, and all believers on the Day when the reckoning will be established.”

“I seek forgiveness from Allah, who is the Ever-Living and the Sustainer of [all] existence, and I repent to Him.”

Which Surah to Recite for A Deceased Person?

There are several Surahs (chapters) from the Quran that are often recited for the deceased. 

Among them are Surah Al-Fatiha (the Opening Chapter) and Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112). 

Additionally, Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2) and Surah Yasin (Chapter 36) are also commonly recited for the deceased.

How Do You Pray for a Deceased Person?

1. Intentions (Niyyah): Begin by making a sincere intention (niyyah) to pray for the deceased person’s forgiveness and mercy. Your intention should be solely for the sake of Allah.

2. Performing Wudu (Ablution): It’s recommended to be in a state of ritual purity by performing ablution (wudu) before engaging in prayers.

3. Facing the Qiblah: Turn towards the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, known as the Qiblah.
