Automate intelligently - from the sensor to the cloud

Away from classic controllers towards complete systems - a trend that Jumo has also adapted to. The company is implementing more and more customer-specific complete solutions for its automation system - and has long since set the course for Industry 4.0.

The journey into the world of measurement and control technology began for Jumo in 1948 with glass contact thermometers. In the years and decades that followed, the portfolio was expanded to include sensors forever new measurement variables. Paperless recorders and controllers of all sizes were added. A milestone in 2011 was the Jumo Mtron T automation system, with which the company finally embarked on the path from component to a system provider.

The complete solution idea is now an integral part of the corporate strategy of the family company from Fulda in Hesse and is manifested in the claim "From the sensor to the cloud". The offer includes sensors for various measured variables, two automation systems, software for process control and visualization, and a cloud solution. The hardware and software solutions are supplemented by comprehensive engineering services.

Flexible hardware and software platform

A new hardware and software platform was used for the first time in the Jumo Varitron 500 central unit, and the issue of "scalability" was at the top of the agenda during its development. The result is modular, flexible and sustainable. It is based on a hardware platform with an 800 MHz processor, which can be used as a single, dual or quad-core variant, depending on the application. The software has a modular structure based on a Linux platform and enables scalability of performance, memory and interfaces. Another special feature is a customer-specific configuration and process data editor.
Several operating stations can be integrated via CODESYS remote target or web visualization as well as up to 64 intelligent connection modules. Visualization libraries are available for individual customer-specific operations.
Furthermore, the flexibility is also made possible by the integration of all important Fieldbus systems via Codesys (e.g. Modbus RTU or TCP master and slave, Profinet IO controller, EtherCAT master and OPC UA server).

Wireless automation possible

With the Jumo Varitron 300, users have a smart solution for automation applications that do not require a wide range of functions of the Varitron 500 system. The system is also based on the Jumo Jupiter platform and uses numerous features of this embedded system.
The central unit has a USB host, two Ethernet interfaces and an RS485 connection as connection options. Up to 32 wireless Jumo Wtrans sensors, for example, to measure temperature or pressure can be connected via a wireless gateway.
A large selection of connection modules with configurable analogue inputs and reliable, self-sufficient PID controllers with self-optimization functions can be connected using a specially developed 1-port router. Displays in various formats are available for visualization.

Automation 4.0 via cloud and SCADA

The global amount of data is growing exponentially in the course of digitization. More and more industrial processes are monitored, analyzed and automated with sensors. The Jumo Cloud and the Jumo Smartware SCADA are helping to build the intelligent factory of the future.
The Jumo Cloud is a cloud-based application software with a predefined user interface. As an IoT platform for process visualization, data acquisition, evaluation and archiving, it enables worldwide access to measurement data via standard web browsers. It is characterized by a high level of security and numerous visualization, alarm and planning functions.
In parallel to the cloud solution, the company developed the Jumo Smartware SCADA. This enables convenient access to measurement data via common web browsers and offers functions for process visualization as well as for evaluating and archiving the recorded data.

Evaluation for the evaluation and visualization of measurement data

The browser-based software solution Jumo Smartware Evaluation also had its premiere recently. It enables the intuitive evaluation and visualization of process data from the Jumo Varitron automation system.
The software is installed centrally on desktops, local servers or in the cloud using Docker technology. Additional installations of software or add-ons for the user are not necessary. Once set up, it enables an unlimited number of users to evaluate and visualize up to 1500 signals.
Here, too, data security has the highest priority. The recorded raw data is securely transferred to a data store and archived by the Jumo Varitron 300 or 500 via Rest-API using the data diode principle. Traceability of the recorded data is also ensured in the event of a configuration change or a device replacement.
The evaluation takes place in a separate area (data view) and is supported by manipulation detection based on digital certificates, so that process data that is subject to verification can be provided reliably and quickly for critical audits.
