Rishi Sunak is likely to hold off on wider reforms to the asylum system until he cracks down on small boats – despite senior Tory and Labour calls to use safe routes to break the model of people smugglers.

Rishi Sunak came under fresh pressure on Wednesday, including some from Conservatives, to establish safe refugee routes to the UK, despite privately vowing to first “break the cycle” of Channel crossings before reforming the asylum system.
