Sam Altman is reportedly shifting his focus from the generative artificial intelligence (AI) realm to the semiconductor industry

The CEO of OpenAI is said to be in discussions with various investors, including those from the United Arab Emirates, with the goal of raising a substantial amount, possibly close to $7 trillion, to enhance the production of AI-specific chips globally. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Altman aims to overcome potential obstacles to OpenAI’s growth, particularly the scarcity of AI chips tailored for training extensive language models. The mentioned funding range is considered unconventional in the realm of corporate fundraising.

Aside from seeking financial support, Altman envisions a comprehensive collaboration between OpenAI, investors, chip manufacturers, and power providers. This collective effort would involve pooling resources to establish and operate factories dedicated to chip production. According to the Financial Times, OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, achieved $2 billion in revenue in December, and it anticipates more than doubling this figure by 2025, citing increased interest from business clients looking to integrate generative AI tools into their operations. Investors currently value OpenAI at over $80 billion.

The company’s annualized revenue, primarily driven by the growth of ChatGPT, reached $1.6 billion in December, up from $1.3 billion in mid-October, as reported by The Information. In contrast, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) forecasts a 13.1% surge in global chip sales, reaching $595.3 billion in the current year, following an approximately 8% decline in 2023.
