How do you know if you have a B2 Level in English

Here are some questions you can ask an English Language student to assess their level at B2:

  1. Can you tell me about your favorite book or movie? What is it about, and why do you like it?
  2. Describe a recent trip or vacation you took. Where did you go, and what did you do there?
  3. Could you explain a current news event that caught your attention? What are the main points or issues related to it?
  4. What are some advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city versus a small town?
  5. Have you ever had to give a presentation or speak in public? How did you prepare for it, and how did it go?
  6. What kind of music do you enjoy listening to? Do you prefer live concerts or recorded music? Why?
  7. Tell me about a time when you faced a difficult situation or challenge. How did you handle it, and what did you learn from it?
  8. If you could change one thing about your country, what would it be and why?
  9. What are some common stereotypes or misconceptions about your culture or country? How do you feel about them?
  10. Discuss the impact of social media on society. What are the positive and negative effects it has had?

These questions cover various topics and require the student to express their thoughts and opinions in English, which is indicative of a B2 level proficiency.

Determining your English Language Proficiency level, such as B2, can be done through various methods. Here are a few common indicators:

CEFR Framework

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a widely recognized standard for assessing language proficiency. B2 is an intermediate level within the framework. Review the CEFR descriptors for B2 to see if your skills align with the expected abilities at this level.

Speaking and Listening

In an informal conversation, can you communicate comfortably on a wide range of topics without struggling to find the right words? Can you understand and respond appropriately to different accents and speech speeds? B2 level speakers are generally able to hold conversations and understand the main points of most discussions.

Reading and Comprehension

Can you read and understand longer texts, such as news articles or fiction, without relying heavily on a dictionary? Are you able to grasp the main ideas, details, and implicit information from a variety of written materials?

Writing

Can you write coherent paragraphs and essays with organized ideas, appropriate vocabulary, and correct grammar? B2 level writing typically demonstrates a reasonable level of accuracy and clarity.

Vocabulary and Grammar

B2 level learners have a solid grasp of intermediate vocabulary and can use a wide range of grammatical structures accurately. Mistakes may still occur, but they do not significantly hinder communication.

Formal Assessment

Taking a formal language proficiency test, such as the Cambridge English exams (FCE or First Certificate in English), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), can provide an objective evaluation of your level. These tests are specifically designed to measure language proficiency across all skills.

It’s important to note that language proficiency levels are not always black and white, and there can be variations within each level. It’s advisable to consult with a language teacher or expert who can evaluate your skills more accurately based on a comprehensive assessment.
