New SIA Courses and Qualifications For SIA Licence Holders From April 2021

New SIA Qualifications For Licence Holders

To keep people and properties safe, it is important that licence holders stay up to date with changes to the law, technology and the way of working. This can be achieved by getting new SIA courses and qualifications. Security Industry Authority (SIA) has a process where every five years they review the qualifications required for SIA Licencing.

As a result of recent consultations, SIA has revised the training specifications for door supervisors and security guards from April 2021. These changes are based on a series of consultations and suggestions. These suggestions have been postulated by the industry representatives and subject matter experts. For door supervisor’s training, a large number of experts favoured the more realistic and practical learning under pressure (especially for physical intervention) They also favoured the inclusion of scenarios based on real-life situations. There were also a lot of suggestions for better self-defence techniques against armed and drunk persons. More stricter controls on trainers, independent invigilated exams and refresher training were also brought into attention.

For Security Guarding and SIA Door Supervisor course, the top three recommendations were:

  • Introduction of English Language skills test
  • First aid requirement and
  • Physical intervention

New SIA Course

SIA has announced new training from 1st of April 2021 for SIA door supervisor’s licence which will be delivered for minimum 6 days. It is important to note that every learner must have First Aid (minimum 1 Day Emergency First Aid at Work) before they start their SIA training.

TOP-UP Training

To renew current SIA licence you do not need to have full new qualification but must get 2 days ‘’top up’’ training and also must have at least 1 Day Emergency First Aid at Work training.

New topics of SIA Training

Apart from Emergency First Aid, SIA has planned to include the information on Covid-19, health and safety procedures, citizen’s arrest and record keeping. There will be sections on communication skills, protecting vulnerable people and management of incident.

Why Top-up training?

This will be extra training to make sure that existing licence holders of Door Supervisor and Security Guard are at the same level as new applicants in the industry. These changes will effectively impact all the roles including Door supervisors and Security Guards. One of the major inclusions in security and door supervisor training courses is First Aid training (Emergency First Aid at Work). That mean, to renew an existing licence or get a new SIA badge, they must have Emergency First Aid at Work qualification.

What is Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)?

Emergency First Aid at Work Training is considered very important to help someone who is injured or ill. This training will be essential for all Door Supervisors and Security Guards.
