Big jump in international college enrollment after pandemic

According to a survey of thousands of universities released on November 14, 2022, the number of international students in US colleges is set to increase in 2021 after a significant decline during the pandemic.

According to the survey, in the 2002-22 academic year, the number of international students has increased by 4 percent to about one million students. The survey also found that many higher education officials were expected to see this rebound. This data also showed that there has been a decline in the number of students coming from China.

The “Open Doors 2022 Report on International Educational Exchange” was released by the Institute of International Education and the State Department of Educational and Cultural Affairs on 14 November 2022. The survey included students enrolled in and optional practical training – temporary assignments related to their academic field – at some 3,000 colleges and universities in the US.

A separate, much smaller survey of more than 600 schools this fall offered a more recent snapshot of the data, finding an additional 9 percent increase in enrollment by international students.

The numbers are closely monitored for the cultural and economic impact of such exchanges; International students transform the educational experience of American students studying with them. And, according to the Department of Commerce, they will enter the U.S. in 2021. Contributed $32 billion to the economy.

In data spanning more than a century, Alan E. Goodman, chief executive of the Institute of International Education (IIE), said he has seen international exchanges pick up even during pandemics and grow rapidly afterward.

Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, welcomed the increase. “We are thrilled to see an increase in the number of international students, and look to the US to maintain our global leadership as the top destination of choice for international students,” Satterfield said in a statement.

Satterfield said that welcoming international students to US campuses is “at the heart of our people-to-people diplomacy and a fundamental factor in our US foreign policy strategy to attract top talent to America.”

At the same time, the number of students from India increased by nearly 19 percent to nearly 200,000.

Prior to 2020, the number of students from China was increasing from the 2009–10 academic year, Mirka Martel, head of research, evaluation and learning for IIE, said, adding that the pandemic and its impact on travel is probably one of the primary reasons why Chinese students were unable to travel to the USA or were choosing to postpone their studies.

In response to a question about concerns about the difficulty of Chinese students obtaining student visas, Rob Bachelder, managing director of visa services at the Bureau of Consular Affairs at the State Department, said students wishing to study in Science, Technology The vast majority of US, engineering and mathematics fields are able to obtain a visa and travel here without any serious delays or complications.
