New data by Student Accommodation finds how much the average Australian spends per month for students living in a purpose-built Student Accommodation (PBSA). This new report also reveals that more Australian students are living in PBSA than ever before.

Domestic students in particular account for 26% of all PBSA residents in Australia. It is also under the same number as China (27%).

This data, prepared in partnership with Accenture, revealed that the average PBSA student spends AUD 4,400 (approximately INR 2.37 Lakh) per month, excluding tuition fees. By comparison, the average Australian spends AUD 4,600 (approximately INR 2.48 lakh) per month, a figure that includes any children and dependents.

Tory Brown, executive director of the Student Accommodation Council, said the report highlights the significant contribution of the student accommodation sector to the economy.

Tory Brown added that “this report shows that students living in PBSA are good spenders, and importantly, they are spending it in our CBD where PBSA sites are located”.

Tory Brown continued, “What is clear in this report is the important role of PBSA in releasing pressure on the housing market, as students living in these buildings are no longer competing with mothers and fathers for private rentals.

Tory went on to say that “reports show that PBSA buildings are already at capacity in most Australian cities, and we are yet to return all of our international students.

The report states that there are 200 PBSAs nationally, with approximately 76,000 students residing. It does not include university colleges.

The report also confirmed that education is Australia’s fourth largest export – behind iron ore, coal and gas – and was valued at AUD 40 billion before the pandemic.
