What is a Growth Mindset for Kids?

A growth mindset is a way of thinking about intelligence and abilities. In short, individuals with a growth mindset believe everyone can improve their skills with effort and perseverance.

A large body of research, largely headed by psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck of Stanford University, shows that teaching children about a growth mindset can make them more resilient against obstacles!

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

In contrast to a growth mindset, people with a fixed mindset believe that they are born with a set IQ, and there is not much one can do to change that.

How to explain growth mindset to kids

As a former elementary school counselor, I know how tough it can be to explain abstract ideas like a growth mindset to a 5-year-old! In short, here is what I told my students:

The brain is like a muscle; it gets stronger with use.
This is the idea behind a growth mindset: Believing that your brain can change and grow with time and effort.
The more you challenge yourself and learn new skills, the more intelligent you will be!

I loved showing this short Class Dojo video to my elementary students when teaching the concept of growth mindset!

Fortunately, there are also a wealth of children’s picture books that will help you teach young kids about a growth mindset in simple terms. Take a peak at my favorite titles here.

What is a Growth Mindset Quote?

Quotes are one of the most powerful tools to teach a growth mindset! You can whisper a short statement into their ear, write a surprise note for their lunchbox, or have them choose their favorite saying to hang in their bedroom.

Not only do quotes provide concrete examples of what a growth mindset looks like, but they can quickly become a child’s favorite mantra to get through tough times.
