What is Ken-Betwa link project

केन बेतवा लिंक परियोजना के बारे में पूर्ण जानकारी

Ken Betwa Link Project is a project to connect 2 rivers, Ken River and Betwa river, in which excess water will be transferred from Ken river to Betwa river.

  • What is the need to link these two rivers?
  • What is the purpose behind this?

You will find all the information below.

Some important information about these rivers:-

Ken river originates from Kaimur hills in Rithi tehsil of Katni district under Vindhyachal mountain range, joins Yamuna river through Panna Tiger Reserve, while Betwa river falls under Ghoridant hill of Vindhyachal mountain in Kumhara village (Jhiri village) of Raisen district. ) and merges with the Yamuna. Betwa river is also called the lifeline of Bundelkhand.

Why Ken-Betwa will be linked?

In India, 80% of the rain is received in just 4 months, as a result of which there is a situation of floods while in some places there is a situation of drought. The project is being brought to balance this water imbalance, so that where there is more water supply than demand, it can be shifted. And make rain water reach everyone throughout the year.

The main objective of this link project:-

Under this project, water supply is to be made to the drought prone areas of Bundelkhand, which include the districts of Jhansi, Lalitpur, Mahoba, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh etc.

Under this, agricultural production has to be increased by irrigating about 6 lakh hectares of land. Due to which the farmers of Bundelkhand will be able to reduce the problem of water to some extent.

Ken and Betwa River Link Project

This project will provide potable water to more than 60 lakh people.

Employment opportunities for the local people will increase during the implementation of the project.

The Government of India, taking a step forward on 22 March 2021 on World Water Day, approved the Ken-Betwa River Interlinking Project. At the same time, a historic agreement was signed between the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to implement the Ken Betwa River Interlinking Project.

Problem of Ken-Betwa river linking project:-

The most important concern of the environmentalist is that the Daudhan dam which is going to be built on the Betwa river will submerge 9000 hectares of land, out of which about 5800 hectares is part of the important tiger habitat, Panna Tiger Reserve.

The height of the dam is 77 meters, which may affect the nesting sites of critically endangered vultures in the surrounding area.

Due to the construction of the Daudhan or Makodia dam, about 20,000 people will have to be displaced, which will create a problem of resettlement.

Conclusion:

Although this project will provide drinking water, electricity, irrigation facility to Bundelkhand and will increase agricultural production, income of farmers, but on the other hand it will also have adverse effects on social and environment. Therefore, the government should find some way so that the adverse effects on the environment are minimized and social life is also not disturbed.
