World Photography Day 2023

World Photography Day, observed on August 19, is an annual, worldwide celebration of the incredible art, craft, science and history of photography. It aims to inspire photographers across the world to share a single photo with the purpose of ‘sharing their world with the world’.

History of World Photography Day

World Photography Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process that was developed in 1837 by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. On January 9, 1839, the French Academy of Sciences declared the Daguerreotype process. On August 19, the French government acquired the patent for it and called the invention a gift “free to the world”.

The Daguerreotype wasn’t the first permanent photographic image. In 1826, Niepce captured the earliest known permanent photograph known as “View from the Window at Le Gras” using heliography. The photograph was initially made by Nicéphore Niépce, using silver chloride coating paper. However, the photo eventually turned completely dark as he wasn’t aware of how to remove the silver chloride from the paper to preserve the photograph. Thomas Sutton took the first durable colour photograph in 1861, three black-and-white photographs taken through red, green and blue filters. The photographic emulsions in use were insensitive to the spectrum, so the outcome was imperfect, and the demonstration was forgotten.

The First Photography Day in 2010

On August 19, 2010, World Photography Day was hosted with the first global online gallery. More than 270 photographers shared their images, and people from over 100 countries visited the website. This marked the first official World Photography Day.

American Robert Cornelius clicked the first selfie in 1839. He set his camera up, clicked the image by removing the lens cap and then ran into the frame. On the back of the image, he wrote “The first light picture ever taken 1839”.

Years later, the first digital photograph was taken in 1957. This was almost 20 years before Kodak’s engineer designed the first digital camera. The photo is a digital scan of an image initially taken on film, portraying Russell Kirsch’s son. It has a resolution of 176×176.
