IES 2023 Exam Pattern

Before proceeding with the IES syllabus, let us have a look at the exam pattern of this toughest exam in the world. The IES exam is conducted in three stages — Preliminary, Mains and Personality Test. To be qualified for the post, the candidate has to clear all three stages.

IES Preliminary

The first stage of the exam, also known as the preliminary exam consists of two papers — Paper-I and Paper-II. Both papers have objective-type questions. Paper-I, which carries 200 marks, covers questions on General Studies and Engineering Aptitude. The allotted time for the paper is 2 hours.  Paper II covers a diverse range of topics from the Engineering discipline. The paper carries 300 marks and the time duration is 3 hours. The candidates who qualify the Stage-I are cleared for the next stage. The selection process is solely at the discretion of the evaluating authority.

IES Mains

The second stage of the IES exam, also known as the mains exam has two papers—Paper-I and Paper-II. Both the papers are conventional in nature which means that the questions asked are descriptive. The IES syllabus for both papers consists of topics from the Engineering branches mentioned above. Time management is crucial in this stage as the questions demand a great level of attention and detail. Each paper in this stage carries 300 marks to be covered in 3 hours.
