Among the most prominent exams after the 10th, the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad is a well-known high school-level competition that is held annually in India since 1989. It is conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education. Every year, before the final showdown, the applicants first need to qualify for the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) to be eligible for this test. But, INMO Exam is not the end-point as it is followed by the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). This blog aims to bring you all the essentials of this olympiad exam including its syllabus, stages as well as structure.

Stages of Mathematical Olympiad

To begin with, the Mathematics Olympiad is divided into two stages, i.e.

1. Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (PRMO)
2. Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)
3. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) Exam
4. IMO Training Camp at HBCSE
5. Pre-Departure Camp at HBCSE
6. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

Now, let’s understand these stages in further detail:

1. Organised as a 3-hour examination comprising of 30 questions, PRMO shortlists around 300 students from class 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th along with 60 students from class 12th (the number varies for KV and JNV) for the next level, i.e. RMO.
2. The RMO is usually done 3-4 months prior to the INMO and is a 3-hour test with 6 problems that students need to solve. Through RMO, more than 30 students are selected from classes 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th, and more than 6 students from class 12 plus 5 female candidates from girls’ quota in each region of India are selected for INMO.
3. Conducted by the Mathematical Olympiad Cell every year, INMO is held usually on the third Sunday of January or the first Sunday of February at a total of 30 exam centers across India. Through INMO exam, around 30 students are qualified from classes 8,9,10, 11 with 6 students from class 12 along with 5 female awardees from the girls’ quota and then sent to a month-long training program or camp set by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) where they are trained to compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). 
4. International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp is organised for INMO awardees generally from April to May for one month. Then, a series of selection tests are conducted at the camp through which the top 6 students are chosen from a combined pool of junior and senior candidates which are then sent to IMO 2020 to compete at a global level.

Eligibility Criteria

Only those students are qualified for INMO exam who have successfully cleared the prior two levels of PRMO and RMO. As mentioned above, around 30 candidates from class 8, 9, 10, 11 as well as 6 candidates from class 12 are shortlisted from RMO with 5 female candidates on girls’ quota. Also, apart from this, there is a special criteria for KV schools outside India as more than 5 students from these schools may get selected directly for INMO exam as per the selection procedure by KVS (girls from 12th class are not qualified for girls’ quota).

INMO Exam: Syllabus & Structure

The INMO exam consists of 6 questions in total and the students get a total time of 4 hours.

The questions broadly cover four main topics, namely, Higher Algebra, Geometry, Combinatorics and Number Theory. Under these categories, the following concepts are covered:

• Elementary Graph Theory
• Probability Theory and Number Theory
• System of Linear Equations
