Counted as one of the toughest exams in India, the Joint Entrance Exam(JEE) Main is a popular competitive exam for pursuing BTech/BE degree or Architecture. Conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency(NTA), the exam assesses the competencies of the potential candidates in Physics, Chemistry, and Maths who want to do engineering and aptitude and maths for architecture aspirants. Nationality

The JEE Main exam is open for all those who wish to pursue different branches of engineering from the highly sought after institutions in India like IITs, NIT’s, etc. Not only restricted to the Indian citizens, foreign nationals including the NRIs, OCIs, PIOs are also allowed to appear for the exam as per the JEE Main eligibility conditions. 

JEE Main Eligibility Age

• For General Category: All candidates belonging to the General category must be born on or after October 1st 1995. 
• For Reserved Category: Candidates belonging to PwD, SC and ST categories have been provided with a relaxation of up to 5 years i.e. those born on and after October 1st, 1990 can appear for the 2023 exam. 
• Further, as per the JEE main eligibility criteria, those candidates who have completed their 10+2 or its equivalent in 2021, 2022 or would be completing their 12th in 2023 can also appear in the main exam irrespective of age. 
•  A person of any age could apply for JEE Mains as long as he/she qualifies all the other eligibility requirements. But what one needs to note is that as per the JEE main eligibility criteria, only those candidates who have completed their 10+2 or its equivalent in 2019, 2020 or would be completing their 12th in 2023 can appear in the JEE main exam irrespective of age. 

Opted Subjects 

As per the JEE main eligibility, the candidates appearing for JEE Main 2024 must have studied at least five subjects in their 10+2 or other qualifying examinations with Physics and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. While considering the five subjects, the candidates must have studied Language and an elective like Music, Physical Education, Informatics Practises, Drawing, etc, apart from the MPC subjects(Maths, Physics, and Chemistry). 

Further, the applicants appearing in the JEE Main exam would also write specific papers as per the courses they wish to pursue. Listed below is the paper specific JEE Main eligibility: 

• B.E./ B.Tech – Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry / Technical Vocational Subject / Biology / Biotechnology along with any other subject. 
• B.Arch / B. Planning – Physics, Language & Mathematics [mandatory subjects], Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational Subject along with any other subject.

Number of Attempts

The candidates can begin their attempts soon after the completion of their 10+2 exams. You can appear for the exam 3 years in a row. As in 2023 the JEE exam will be held four times i.e., in February, March, April and May, you can appear in all these four exams and that would be considered as only one attempt in a year So, this gives you the chance to prove your capabilities six times at a stretch and successfully fulfill your career aspiration. 

Passing Year & list of the Qualifying Exams 

Those who have appeared in the 12th Boards exam in the year 2023 can appear for the qualifying exam provided that they can produce a copy of their result.

Apart from this, there are certain qualifying exams specified in the JEE main eligibility that are given consideration to taking admission in some of the premier engineering colleges across the country. Some of these are: 

• 12th standard exams conducted by the recognized Central Boards and State Boards like the CBSE, HSB, etc. 
• Two-year pre-university exam or Intermediate exam conducted by recognized boards or University. 
• The Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy’s final examination. 
• Passing or have passed the National Institute of Open Schooling’s Senior Secondary School Examination with a basic minimum of five subjects studied in the year of passing. 
• A degree considered to be equivalent to 10+2 from any Public School/ Board/ University in the Indian sub-continent or foreign country that has attained recognition by the Association of Indian Universities [AIU]. 
• Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
• In case of admission to IITs, a Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State board of technical education of at least a 3-year duration is also recognized. 
• In case of admission to IITs, Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva’s High School Certificate Examination is also recognized. 
• In the case of diploma holders, one can appear in the JEE Main exam but they would not be considered as fulfilling the JEE Main eligibility for admission to NITs, CFTIs.

JEE Main Eligibility Marks in 12th

As per the JEE main eligibility criteria, a minimum of 75% marks in the boards or else must be a part of the top 20 percentile in the class 12th exams conducted by respective boards while taking admission in IITs, IIITs, NITs, and CFTIs. On the other hand, for the reserved category, a  minimum of 65% marks in the qualifying examination is required. 

State of Eligibility – JEE Mains 2023

The candidates must fulfill the following requirements concerning their State while applying for JEE Mains 2023. 

1. While filling the form, the students need to mention their state code of eligibility and this code will be similar to the code of the state from where you have completed your 12th or equivalent examination. And it won’t be dependent upon your native place or the place of permanent residence. 

2. In case the student has completed his/her class 12th education abroad, the state code of eligibility will be of the place in India, which is mentioned on the candidate’s passport. 

3. In case the candidate has completed from National School of Open Learning, the state code of eligibility will be according to the place where their study center is located. 

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for Droppers

There are some candidates who apply for JEE Mains after a gap of one year.
