Early Life and Education of Kiran Bedi:

Kiran Bedi was born to Prakash Lal Peshawaria and Prem Lata on June 9, 1949, in Amritsar, Punjab, India. She belongs to a peshawar based migrated family. Her family’s upbringing was not religious but she has brought up in both Hindu as well as Sikh Traditions

From childhood, she was a bright student . in 1968, from S.R.Government College, Amritsar, she has completed her BA in English. Then she enrolled for MA in Pol. Sci. in Panjab University, Chandigarh and in 1970, she completed her master degree.

Tennis career

Kiran Bedi’s father introduced her to tennis at the age of nine. When she was a teenager and playing tennis, she made the decision to cut her hair short to prevent it from affecting her game. In 1964, she competed in the national junior lawn tennis championship at Delhi Gymkhana, which was her first tournament outside of Amritsar. Although she lost in the early rounds, she persevered and won the championship two years later in 1966. As the national champion, she was qualified to enter the Wimbledon junior championship, but unfortunately, she was not nominated by the Indian administration.

Since childhood, Kiran Bedi was passionate for police service and she always admired the officers who tirelessly worked day night to maintain law and order.

She always believed that the police force has power to bring a positive change in society.

She joined police service as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in 1972.

She was the very first woman who has joined police service as an IPS officer as well as the police commissioner of Delhi.

During her career life, she worked In Delhi as the Inspector General of Prisons(IGP), In Chandigarh as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) , and in Hyderabad as the Commandant of the National Police Academy.

During her career life, she introduced education and vocational training program for prisoners.

In order to make the communities safer, harmonious and build the trust between police force and common man, she introduced community policing.

From 2016 to 2021, she served as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
