Pharaohs Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s Tomb Was The Best Persevered Tomb in Ancient Egypt

In 1922, Howard Carter discovered the burial tomb of King Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. This was the first tomb that was found where everything inside was untouched.

Since pharaohs were buried with their most treasured items, many tombs of pharaohs were robbed and destroyed throughout the years. Inside the tomb, Tutankhamun’s body was found buried inside three coffins.

The third coffin was made of gold and it held his mummified body. Also found in the tomb were  golden shrines, jewellery, a chariot, and clothing. Tutankhamun’s golden burial mask was also found.

Pharaohs Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Cleopatra Was The Last Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt

Cleopatra is one of the most well known figures of Ancient Egypt and she is known as the last Pharaoh of Egypt. Throughout her time, Cleopatra coruled Egypt first with her brother Ptolemy XIII and then her younger brother Ptolemy XIV.

Cleopatra married two Roman leaders, first Julius Caesar and then Marc Antony. Cleopatra and Julius Caesar had a child named Caesarion, which means little Caesar. Cleopatra and Marc Antony fought against Roman leader Octavian, who was the legal heir of Julius Caesar, in the Battle of Actium in 31 B.C.

This battle led to Antony and Cleopatra killing themselves. Her death brought an end to the Egyptian Empire, which was taken over by Octavion, also known as Emperor Augustus.

Pharaohs Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: King Khufu Built The Great Pyramid of Giza

Pharaoh Khufu took the Egyptian throne at 20 years of age and ruled over Egypt for 24 years. Khufu is best known for building the Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the ‘Pyramid of Khufu’.

The purpose of the Great Pyramid of Giza was to serve as his tomb for his journey to the afterlife. The Great Pyramid of Giza is a part of a group of three pyramids known as the Giza Necropolis.

This includes the Pyramid of Menkaure and the Pyramid of Khafre, which were built by Khufu’s descendents. The Giza Necropolis also has the famous Great Sphinx statue.

Pharaohs Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Pharaohs Had to Wear Make-up

Both male and female pharaohs wore make-up. Egyptians mostly used kohl, which was a black paint that protected their eyes from the harsh sun. Malachite powder was also used and it made the eyes appear larger.

Pharaohs wore make-up for both cosmetic and practical reasons but also for spiritual reasons. The almond or felin-shaped eye make-up allowed Pharaohs to closely resemble the god Horus and the “eye of Horus”.

Pharaohs also wore fake breads, including women Pharaohs. For example, Hatshepsut, the first female Pharaoh wore a fake beard to look more Pharaoh-like.

Pharaohs Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: Menes Was The First Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt

Menes became the first Pharaoh of Egypt over 5,000 years ago. Menes was ruler of Upper Egypt and he decided to join together both Upper and Lower Egypt to create a single monarchy.

The combined lands were called the “The Two Lands” and Menes became the ruler. Menes ruled over Ancient Egypt for 62 years and legend has it that he was apparently killed by a hippopotamus.
