Apatosaurus Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: Apatosaurus Belongs to The Group of Dinosaurs Known as Sauropods

The Sauropods were large dinosaurs with massive bodies, and four pillar-like legs. The Brachiosaurus dinosaur was also a part of the sauropods group. The name Apatosaurus means “deceptive lizard.” The Apatosaurus is also known as the Brontosaurus.

The Apatosaurus weighed as much as five elephants. The Apatosaurus was discovered by American palaeontologist Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877.

Apatosaurus Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Most Apatosaurus Remains Have Been Found in North America

Apatosaurus lived about 147 to 137 million years ago. This period was known as the Late Jurassic period. Most Apatosaurus fossils have been found in North America, in particular,  Wyoming, Utah, Oklahoma, and Colorado.

The Apatosaurus lived in dry lands. Fossils of the Apatosaurus can be seen at the American Museum of Natural History.

Apatosaurus Facts for Kids Fact Number 3: Apatosaurus’ Were Herbivores

The Apatosaurus was an herbivore, meaning it only ate plants. Many big dinosaurs were herbivores and they had to eat large quantities of leaves in order to sustain their size.  The Apatosaurus probably lived and travelled in herds, similar to elephants today.

The Apatosaurus fed on the leaves, ferns and needles of trees and plants. The Apatosaurus didn’t chew its food, instead it swallowed small stones to help grind up the plants in its stomach and help with digestion.

Apatosaurus Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Apatosaurus Was One of The Largest Land Animals of All Time

The Apatosaurus was roughly over 40 feet in height and with its neck stretched out it could reach a length of 70 feet. Apatosaurus stood and walked on all four legs and it had claws on its large feet.

Its head was small and horse-like and it had long teeth that were shaped like pegs. Apatosaurus didn’t need sharp teeth as they didn’t eat meat. Scientists have estimated that Apatosaurus had a lifespan of over 100 years.

Similar to other dinosaurs, the Apatosaurus reproduced by laying eggs. It is said that the eggs they laid were massive at around 1 ft wide.

Apatosaurus Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: Apatosaurus Had a Very Long Neck

The Apatosaurus had a really long neck and tail. Its long neck allowed it to reach trees as high as 35 feet. It is thought that the Apatosaurus may have used its long neck to reach for food that’s high up and its tail would have been used as a defensive weapon against predators.

The Apatosaurus may have used their tail in a whip-like motion to fight off predators. It is also thought that they used their tail for balance.
