Metals Facts for Kids Fact Number 1: Metals Are on The Periodic Table

There are all sorts of metals shown on the periodic table. Pure metals are metals that are made out of the same atom. These metals include many elements that you have probably come across in your life such as iron, gold and silver.

The periodic symbols for these are Fe for iron , Au for gold and Ag for silver. The periodic table divides metal elements into different types such as alkali metals, e.g. sodium and potassium and alkaline earth metals, e.g. magnesium and calcium.

Many metals that we use today are alloys, otherwise known as metallic compounds.  Often alloys are stronger and harder than pure metal as they are made up of more than one element. Steel is a very strong type of alloy.

Steel is used in many of the world’s industries, such as cooking utensils or jewellery. Aluminium alloys are also very important. Aluminium is one of the most used elements. This metal does not rust and therefore is used to make items such as ladders, aeroplanes and golf clubs.

The properties of most metals are solid, hard materials at room temperature. One metal defies this rule. Mercury is a liquid at room temperature. Have you ever looked at a thermometer to see what temperature it is? Well the liquid you see in a thermometer is actually mercury.

Copper was first used by man over 10,000 years ago. This was the only metal known for thousands of years and it was used to make weapons. Thousands of years ago, metals would be hammered into shape or melted and poured into a mold.

Blacksmiths were the names given to tradesmen who made iron and steel tools. The first ever alloy made was bronze, over 5000 years ago. There is even an era named after this metal. Have you ever heard of the Bronze Age?

Metals Facts for Kids Fact Number 5: Metals Are Good Conductors of Electricity and Heat

This means that metals allow electricity and heat the flow through it. For this reason, many cooking appliances are made from metals such as copper, aluminium and steel.

Wood is the opposite and for this reason many pots and utensils will have wooden handles so that you can hold them without being burnt.
