Educators Express a Glimmer of Hope with the Biden Victory

The US Presidential election results have produced far reaching consequences for the global community. The educational sector is not immune from such repercussions. The recent Biden Victory will favourably impact the fate of foreign students in the US. Observers predict a significant increase in enrollments to reputed American Business Schools in the coming years. This prediction is a potent one because business schools heavily rely upon foreign students, who make up almost 29.2% of the student base in the top business schools in America. The policies of the previous administration had recorded a considerable drop in enrollments. Prior to the Covid outbreak, international enrollment declined by 1.8%. This suggested that students were opting for countries with much friendlier immigration protocols than the US. This scenario will be hopefully altered under the new regime.

Efforts to Improve the Condition

Educators all over the US have been rallying to revoke the unfair measures implemented by the current administration. Isabelle-Bajeux Besnainou, Dean and professor of finance at the Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business stated, “The strength of our nation has always been linked to our ability to attract the world’s top talent and, in particular, the ability to bring top brains from so many different countries to work side-by-side with Americans.” She also highlighted how the enrollments to the business school have fallen by 7% this year owing to poor policy measures as well as the raging pandemic and travel restrictions. Similarly, Esther D. Brimmer, CEO and Executive Director of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, propounded, “The past four years have been one of the most challenging periods in the history of our field, during which international educators have shown unparalleled strength and resilience. They have defended the field against travel bans, executive orders, detrimental regulatory actions and xenophobic rhetoric.”

Policy Changes to Boost International Student Enrollments

President elect Joe Biden’s plans of revoking the existing biased policies have produced a glimmer of hope for the expansion of international student enrollments. He has promised to annul the travel bans as well as reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme. Both these measures will positively enhance the protection and education of immigrant children. This change however, will take a significant amount of time to produce tangible results. Yet this remains a slim glimmer of hope for the weary educators all over the country.
