Worth
I know a drama set in the wake of 9/11 is hard to sell, but Worth is absolutely one of the best movies of 2021. Based on a true story, it follows a lawyer in Washington DC who is tasked with finding out exactly how much Each of the families of the 9/11 victims will receive as part of the insurance payments, literally deciding the value of each person. He fights bureaucracy and cynicism at all times, and is touched by his interactions with the families of the victims. Silver Linings Playbook
While Silver Linings Playbook was listed as an "Oscar movie," with eight nominations, including Best Picture, it's just a solid romantic comedy at heart. Bradley Cooper plays a man suffering from bipolar disorder who returns to live with his parents after being discharged from a psychiatric hospital.
He meets a young woman who has just been widowed (Jennifer Lawerence) who promises to help him get back with his ex-wife, but you wouldn't know it, while training for a big dance competition, Cooper and Lawrence accidentally fall in love. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
The 2020 film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a powerful showcase for the acting talents of everyone involved, including Chadwick Boseman in his latest live action performance. Based on the play of the same name, the film chronicles a day in the life of iconic singer Ma Rainey as she gathers her team to record a new album on a hot summer day in 1927.
Tensions rise and dialogue creaks between them. Various characters such as Boseman's trumpeter dream of succeeding on her own, while temperamental Ma Rainey knows very well what to expect. This is an excellent acting-driven drama.

Inception
If you're in the mood for a mind-blowing blockbuster that makes you think, this really isn't a bad time to watch Inception. Christopher Nolan's movie was a bit risky when it was made: a wildly expensive original movie set in a landscape dominated by remakes, sequels, and reboots. The gamble paid off, as this heist thriller about a group of people entering someone else's mind to plant an idea was a box office phenomenon and racked up a couple of Oscars in awards season.
The action sequences are completely slick, the characters are charismatic and unique, and there's an emotional hook at the center that makes you really care about what's going on. This is one of the best blockbusters ever made.

Magnolia
If you're in the mood for some really intense drama, there is nothing more intense than Magnolia. After Boogie Nights put it on the map in a big way, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson decided to create an intimate drama on the scale of a sprawling epic. The result is a three-hour play that follows a variety of different characters on different emotional journeys that intersect in one way or another:
Tom Cruise is a misogynistic self-help guru; William H. Macy is a former child wizard of game shows; Julianne Moore is the trophy wife of a famous producer. By the PTA itself admits, the movie is a bit overloaded, but it's still one of the biggest and boldest changes of the '90s and it will almost certainly make you cry.

Catch Me If You Can
We didn't talk about it enough, but Catch Me If You Can is absolutely one of the best Steven Spielberg movies that also features one of the best Leonardo DiCaprio performances and one of the best John Williams soundtracks, and all of that is saying something. . Based on a true story, DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale Jr., who became a professional con man at the age of 19, earning millions of dollars while jogging around the world.
But deep down, Catch Me If You Can is the story of a father and a son, and it is actually one of the most personal films Spielberg has made; she was directly influenced by Spielberg upon learning new information about his father's divorce. But this movie is also a true marvel.

The Sum of All Fears
Once upon a time, Ben Affleck made a Jack Ryan movie, and it was pretty good! The Sum of All Fears of 2002 was released at a time when audiences were turning their backs on Affleck, but the movie has aged really well. It is a thriller taught by Tom Clancy in which Affleck plays a CIA analyst racing against the clock to stop the nuclear war between the United States and Russia, which is being unleashed by an Austrian neo-Nazi. It's a tense government thriller, but also really shocking when you get into the third act.

Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino's most financially successful film to date remains his 2012 Western epic Django Unchained, set in 1858 and telling the story of a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) searching to save his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the clutches of a ruthless plantation. owner (Leonardo DiCaprio) - with the help of a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz), of course.
Django Unchained is wildly unsettling in terms of providing an unshakable insight into the life of slaves in America (and the cruelty inflicted on them), but it also has that Tarantino twist that makes it wildly entertaining, a combination that may seem strange. to some. tasteless. No matter how you fall, DiCaprio's menacing performance is hands down among his best, Foxx's arc is particularly impressive, and it's hard to argue with Waltz's Oscar win for his supporting role.

Hands down one of the best Netflix originals, the Fear Street trilogy is the perfect compulsive watch. This adaptation of R.L. The action begins in Fear Street: 1994, which features the town of Shadyside where everything bad always tends to happen.

Snowpiercer
Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho's first English-language film, Parasite, is a strange beast. Set in an Ice Age post-apocalypse triggered by a failed weather control experiment, the entire film takes place within the confines of a constantly running global train that is home to the few survivors. A not-too-subtle twist on class warfare, Snowpiercer follows the desperate inhabitants of the lower-class rear of the train, where they survive on nasty jelly-like nutrient bars (and in truly dire times, something much worse), as they perform a hit.
violent. against the privileged and indulgent elite at the head of the train.Chris Evans turns his charisma and command of Captain America into the darkest incarnation of him as Curtis, the man at the forefront of the rebellion who leads the charge to take over the engine room. Along the way, Snowpiercer travels through the train carriage caste system, each new carriage being a strange and fully self-represented habitat, and paints a microcosmic picture of a deformed society completely contained within a single train. It also includes some visceral combat scenes and an all-time performance by Tilda Swinton.

Air Force One
Ah, the glorious' 90s when you could make an R-rated summer action movie that's basically Die Hard, except it's Air Force One instead of Nakatomi Tower and it's the president of the United States instead of a NYPD. visiting his ex-wife. The simple premise of Air Force One has been kept enduring and entertaining thanks to the A + casting of Harrison Ford as the action star president and Gary Oldman as the leader of the Russian terrorists taking over the president's plane. Wolfgang Petersen handles the action well and takes a particularly nasty bite when needed to increase the stakes while allowing the president's rah-rah heroism beating up the terrorists.

Boogie Nights
Screenwriter and director Paul Thomas Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious filmmakers working today, but his 1997 masterpiece Boogie Nights remains not just one of his best films, but a groundbreaking work that is nonetheless a point. Anderson chronicles the rise and fall of an energetic young man in the 1970s with enormous ... talent. Casting Mark Wahlberg as Dirk Diggler was a stroke of genius, and the way Anderson turns the burgeoning porn industry into a dysfunctional family drama is downright masterful.
And that cast, alive man. Each and every member of the ensemble shines: When you have a movie in which Philip Seymour Hoffman is not the scene stealer, you know you have a stacked cast. Boogie Nights remains as entertaining, heartbreaking, and riveting as ever nearly two decades after its release.

Star Trek
Few franchise reboots have been as successful or exciting as J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie Star Trek. The film had the unenviable task of featuring younger versions of iconic Star Trek characters, while also serving as an exciting and surprising journey on its own. The brilliant solution is that in this story, Leonard Nimoy's Spock travels through a wormhole in time to interact with the younger version of Kirk (Chris Pine), who then places these characters on a chronological path that It has the potential to deviate from the adventures seen. in the original Star Trek series.
But beyond that cool solution, Star Trek is a visually dynamic and exciting blockbuster show, loaded with humor, heart, and action that doesn't sacrifice great characters. It's wonderful from start to finish, and it's one of the best Abrams movies.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
It's amazing that an Oscar nominee for Best Director is the same mastermind behind bullshit like Anchorman and Step Brothers. But writer-director Adam McKay's masterful mastery of tone and subject matter in The Big Short is simply an extension of something he had been up to for years, with Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby acting as one of the biggest hoaxes in the world. general public. in recent memory.
On the surface, it's a goofy comedy starring Will Ferrell as a goofy racing driver. But at its core, Talladega Nights is a devastating defeat for corporate culture and "southern pride." It's incredibly effective, with hilarious supporting twists from John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon increasing the blunder factor exponentially, and the late Michael Clarke Duncan shows a side of himself audiences have never seen before. This is Adam McKay doing what he does best, only on a larger canvas and with considerably more Mountain Dew.

The Game
The Game is something of a hidden gem in director David Fincher's filmography. The 1997 film marked his follow-up to Se7en, and he decided to tell a mystery that is about guiding the audience away from him. Michael Douglas plays a wealthy investment banker who receives a birthday present from his brother - a real-world "game" featuring his life experience.
As the story unfolds, the audience (and Douglas's character) are unsure whether what is happening is part of the game or is actually real. Your repeat viewing mileage may vary as this is a movie you can only be amazed at once, but there is a great movie on display from Fincher and Douglas that delivers an excellent performance.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
If you're looking for a dose of nostalgia, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery may be the solution. The 1997 comedy was a huge box office success and invaded the spirit of the age like few other films. Mike Myers plays the lead role of Austin Powers, a British spy who is frozen until his arch nemesis Dr. Evil (also Myers) returns.
That comeback takes place in 1997, and we have a fish out of water movie packed with great visual jokes. Myers was clearly inspired by the James Bond franchise, and in fact, silly as Austin Powers is, it's also a pretty compelling spy movie in its own right.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines
You've seen a trillion animated family comedy movies, but The Mitchells vs. the Machines is without a doubt one of the best. Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and originally made by Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the film finds a father and daughter struggling to connect, and follows the family as the Father decides that they should take a road trip to send her to the university where she is studying to be a filmmaker.
Along the way, the robot apocalypse occurs, forcing them to work together to get ahead. At every turn, The Mitchells vs. the Machines is amazing. He strives for emotional scenes to hit hard, but is also wildly colorful and beautifully artistic when Mike Rianda pushes the boundaries of visual expression.
On top of all that, the movie is hilarious and reminiscent of the colorful comedy from the other Lord and Miller movies, most notably Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. This movie will make you laugh and cry in equal measure, and it's one of the best movies of 2021, period.

Crimson Peak
The first thing to know about Guillermo del Toro's misunderstood 2015 film Crimson Peak is that it is a gothic romance, not a horror movie. There are ghosts, no doubt, and definitely spooky parts, but the movie is more inspired by Jane Eyre or Rebecca than The Conjuring. And that's why it's so cool. Set in 1901, the story follows an aspiring author (Mia Wasikowska) who meets a handsome English gentleman (Tom Hiddleston) and falls in love with her.
The two marry quickly and she moves to a remote part of England to live on an aging estate with her new husband and her frozen sister (Jessica Chastain). The estate ends up full of ghosts, and twists abound as our young protagonist finds herself in trouble. It is a haunting, romantic, and chilling ghost story that has been carefully crafted by one of the best filmmakers working today.

2013's Rush is a grossly underrated movie, but if you're a fan of racing dramas or true stories about perseverance, it hits the spot. Chris Hemsworth plays Formula One driver James Hunt, and the story follows Hunt's rivalry in the 1970s with Austrian driver Nikki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). Shutter Island
Shutter Island is underrated. There I said it. Martin Scorsese went out and adapted a Dennis Lehane book, turning the thriller into a psychological thriller full of twists and turns. The story revolves around a pair of US Marshals played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo who arrive on an isolated island to investigate a disappearance in a mysterious psychiatric facility.
Something is definitely happening as soon as they arrive, but Scorsese delights in throwing various twists and turns at you along with an emotional punch that is all about emotion. This is also one of those movies that he plays differently the second time he sees it.

ParaNorman
If you are looking for a fun family movie that is also really creepy and has a surprising message, I urge you to check out ParaNorman. The stop-motion animated film comes from LAIKA, the same studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, and is absolutely one of the best films of him. It revolves around a boy named Norman who has the ability to see and speak to the dead, which comes in handy when his small Massachusetts town is invaded by terrifying demons.
The story draws heavily on iconic '80s movies like The Goonies and E.T. But it never feels derivative, and it actually carries with it a surprising and emotional message about bullying and anger, and the complexity of emotions that children can sometimes feel. It is also a lot of fun.

Enola Holmes
Enola Holmes is one of the best and most charming Netflix Original movies released yet. Based on the book series of the same name by Nancy Springer, the mystery of the time follows the main character of Millie Bobby Brown, who is Holmes' younger sister and has been raised almost alone by her single mother.
But when she wakes up one day to find that her mother is missing, she takes matters into her own hands and sneaks into London to solve the case. The movie is wildly funny, as Enola fearlessly follows clues and searches for clues, but it's also a surprisingly moving mother-daughter story with legitimately feminist themes.
Actually, the script takes time to consider what it means to be a woman in a man's world in an organic (and important) way for the story at hand. It's one of Brown's best performances, but Henry Cavill is also a delight as Sherlock Holmes himself. Once the movie is over, you'll be begging Netflix to make a lot more sequels.

The Conjuring
James Wan had already made a name for himself in the horror genre with mega-franchise headlines SAW in 2004 and Insidious in 2010, and accomplished the impossible once again with the 2013 film, The Conjuring. This is a movie that was "so scary and intense" at the time that Warner Bros. hit it with an R rating even though there was no gore, gore, excessive violence, or profanity.
I can recall a convention hall full of people muttering to themselves and fidgeting as the "clapping game" scene unfolded, to gasps and thunderous applause. You can relive the same terrifying experience in the comfort of your own home. The Conjuring features Ed and Lorraine Warren (Wilson and Farmiga), based on real-life paranormal investigators.
They try to help the traumatized Perron family whose farm harbors a dark and deadly presence. Warren themselves soon discover that this is not a mere hoax, but something much more sinister. The Conjuring is a fantastic addition to the horror genre and the start of a solid franchise.

Rain Man
If you're in the mood for the Best Picture winner, check out Rain Man. The 1988 film stars Tom Cruise at a crucial point in his career as he leaned more into dramatic territory and scored with this story. of a yuppie who discovers that his estranged father has died and left everything to his mentally challenged brother.
He takes his brother out of a care facility and pretends to use him to get the money. But during his road trip, Cruise's character forges a bond with his brother who was never there, and begins to recall events from his past that may explain the behavior of his father. The Hateful Eight
The Hateful Eight is a disgusting job of Quentin Tarantino, his cruelest movie yet. It is true to its title, as the story takes place in 1877 and it encounters eight strangers seeking shelter from a snowstorm in a small cabin. No one really knows what to think of each other, and they're all lying about their backstories anyway.
The result is the closest thing to a play Tarantino has ever written, but it's packed with surprises and some dynamite character interactions. You also have two ways to watch it on Netflix - there's the theatrical version, and then there's the extended version for which Tarantino divided the movie into chapters. Mank
Fair warning, Mank may really only be appealing to cinephiles or those who have a fondness for old Hollywood, but if it's your thing, it's very much your thing. The drama is the first Netflix movie from filmmaker David Fincher, and he clearly relishes the creative freedom as he chronicles the true-history behind the inspiration and writing of the screenplay for Citizen Kane. Gary Oldman plays Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, a drunk and script doctor who decides with Citizen Kane he's going to write his masterpiece.
We see the various inspirations for the controversial screenplay come in and out of Mank's life, and the film has a soft spot for a screenwriter who, by and large, didn't care about receiving credit... until Kane. The production value is impeccable, as Fincher crafts a lush black-and-white feature that’s made to look (and sound) like it was released in 1941.
